Come Home to Mama isn't always an easy or cheery listen, but anyone familiar with Martha Wainwright's work knows not to expect that; it is a compelling, engaging, and emotionally powerful set of songs from a strikingly talented singer and songwriter, and this is her most intimate and affecting work to date.


While it's no surprise to hear someone who's always been a particularly personal songwriter, the emotion is, at times, especially raw.

Consequence of Sound

Whether anyone outside Wainwright’s devoted fanbase will take notice of the album is hard to say, but the world could use more pretty voices with smart ideas.

Under The Radar

The good news for her fans is that this latest offering is her strongest and most interesting record yet.

I'll start this by saying that A.) Martha is actually the best Wainwright and B.) this has some of her best songs on it.
See, it's odd, she started with a perfect album, and while no subsequent record has been as "perfect" it's been for a bold reason: she experiments. Not in broad/experimental terms, but within a sonic space that she's working to carve out. I have almost no doubt that she's got another masterpiece or two on her hands.
