CRITIC REVIEWS

90
Spill Magazine

Tasteful, sophisticated, and soulful. Vedder sounds revitalized on what very well may be his most creatively-charged album in years. In this regard, Earthling is a breathtaking record that is a definite highlight among Vedder’s illustrious career.

90
AllMusic

On a strictly musical basis, Earthling is the most varied project Eddie Vedder has ever released, and it's also his lightest album: there's a palpable joy to his free experiments here that's infectious, even fun.

80
American Songwriter

Earthling suggests Vedder can remain earthbound after all. Figure it’s his best yet.

80
Rolling Stone

On his latest solo outing, Earthling, Vedder unapologetically backspaces onto Pearl Jam’s turf with 13 tracks that recall both the band’s punk energy and its mainstream-rock aspirations in a way that feels distinctively Vedderish.

80
The Sydney Morning Herald
There’s a primal quality in his segue between the lower register and a chest-driven, almost reverential, higher octave.
80
Kerrang!

There’s simply no way of knowing where Earthling is going next – be it in sound or mood – at any given time. All of the musical spontaneity may well alienate some, but its eclecticism is its greatest asset.

80
Mojo

Throughout, Earthling toys with classic radio-rock clichés, only to cleanse them of jadedness via Vedder’s trademark wholehearted investment, a trick which still charms.

80
Record Collector

Earthling gives an uplifting sense of the creative energy shared between Eddie Vedder and his keenly empathetic collaborators, distilled into striking, memorable songs, and unifi ed by a fresh, cohesive sound.

70
Classic Rock
It's strident without being brash, starry without being pompous, middle of the road without being bland.
70
Uncut

An altogether less whimsical - and much more Pearl Jam-esque - undertaking than 2011's Ukulele Songs.

67
Pitchfork
The Pearl Jam leader’s first solo album in over a decade is an amiable, tuneful set with appearances from Stevie Wonder, Ringo Starr, and Elton John.
65
Spectrum Culture

Earthling isn’t Eddie Vedder’s first solo outing, but it’s his first in the fighting spirit of Pearl Jam

60
Clash
While a fun and energetic record, much of the songwriting falls into the somewhat forgettable. Everyone is bringing their A-game, and they're having a blast while doing so, but nothing entirely sticks to the ribs.
60
NME
Stevie Wonder, Elton John, and Ringo Starr appear on the iconic rocker's third solo record, which sees him reach a sense of self-acceptance.
60
PopMatters

Earthling is a panoramic listen of all things Eddie Vedder, a showcase of defiance and loss, and above all, of acceptance, forgiveness, and perseverance.

60
The Young Folks

With Vedder’s own distinctive voice lost in the ensuing shuffle, it amounts to little more than 48 minutes of musical dress-up.

I have sympathy for Eddie, and I have to admit at least to my ears this is a harmless record, nobody should feel offended or angry (not even those that use to hate anything that comes from the 90s) with this extremely simple set of songs. Actually the álbum has a couple of nice and very enjoyable moments. I mean the trilogy that stars with Good & Evil and the song with Sir Elton John are not bad at all. And let’s admit it, most of the time, the guy knows how to write a decent ... read more

The Pearl Jam frontman recorded a very emotional album, in the last record the guys from Seattle went deep into the climatic wilds, and it seemed that Eddie Vedder himself lost his emotional background, but here is an amazing record that is easy to listen to, a classic from the leader of Pearl Jam of the highest level!

I still don't know if I expected another into the wild or something poor. But this is good still knowing this is dad rock. Eddie Vedder is part of the music culture at point to be relevant if he just effort a little, and he did just what they wanted so is thumb up
