There's a deliberate nostalgia to Cowboy Tears, as if Tree is crafting sad songs for people who once snubbed Faith Hill and Tim McGraw in favor of blink-182 and now find themselves looking back with an odd fondness for both.

Back from retirement again, the polarizing, meme-powered pop singer takes up “cowboy emo”: breakup songs with a cartoonish twang and schlocky Western aesthetics.

Even if this isn’t bad and is pretty decent, I don’t think Oliver Tree and his label understand or care that his appeal was his meme persona COMBINED with his well written and produced songs. Because on Cowboy Tears, it just feels like they didn’t focus on the music much and instead cranked the persona up to a point where it becomes annoying and disingenuous and feels like it’s trying too hard to become a viral meme.

I liked a few songs from Oliver Tree before ever trying this, and he seemed pretty fun. Never tried a full project of his before today, but I was excited to. ‘Cowboy Tears’ is not fun. It’s obvious to me that more effort is put into the aesthetic and Tree’s persona than the music itself. This project is derivative and boring. I sort of get the appeal, but man, this is really obnoxious. Inoffensive, sure, though I can’t get past how redundant this all sounds.

terribly uninspired, terrible lyrics, guitars on Get Well Soon are unbearable. So much wasted potential coming off a decent pop-rock album.
