Even if this isn’t bad and is pretty decent, I don’t think Oliver Tree and his label understand or care that his appeal was his meme persona COMBINED with his well written and produced songs. Because on Cowboy Tears, it just feels like they didn’t focus on the music much and instead cranked the persona up to a point where it becomes annoying and disingenuous and feels like it’s trying too hard to become a viral meme.

I used to be a pretty big Oliver Tree fan, and I ... read more

I liked a few songs from Oliver Tree before ever trying this, and he seemed pretty fun. Never tried a full project of his before today, but I was excited to. ‘Cowboy Tears’ is not fun. It’s obvious to me that more effort is put into the aesthetic and Tree’s persona than the music itself. This project is derivative and boring. I sort of get the appeal, but man, this is really obnoxious. Inoffensive, sure, though I can’t get past how redundant this all sounds.

As an Internet personality, I understood the appeal of Oliver Tree, even if I didn’t personally enjoy it. His gimmick, lore, aesthetic, humor, etc all felt very reminiscent of the “lol random” humor of the early 2010’s that by the time I found him in 2018 it just felt very tired and played out. However, I had just turned 20, I was probably too old to be able to click with the Oliver Tree gimmick and I’m fairly certain I wasn’t the target audience to do so ... read more

I AM OLIVER TREES BIGGEST HATER. SHUT THE HELL UP

oliver tree is the last person I would expect to go to country and not good country. The album is characterized by the fact that it sounds like a homeless man in front of a guitar shop from a garbage can, having mutations, everything in this album can be irritated by a nightmarish and repetitive vocal, a production devoid of panache and taste, or ask for a personality that cannot be watched and, above all, listened to. I also wanted to remind you about the scandal where oliver interceded on the ... read more

I really don't want to pile onto the Oliver Tree hate train, I really don't, but 'Cowboy Tears' has very few redeeming qualities about it and it's easily one of the most annoying, grating and tacky albums to come out this year. I'm not someone who actively follows Oliver Tree or his online persona, I only really found out who he was when he released his last album 'Ugly is Beautiful', which was an inoffensive Pop album that had a few tracks that I enjoyed, but a lot of it was very ... read more

Really bland + the vocals are whiny and annoying. The album does have some sections that are alright but for the most part, it's a lousy listen.

Note: 'California' is basically fully unlistenable due to how obnoxious the vocals are.

Ugly is Beautiful didn't exactly receive the best reception on this site, but I found it pretty enjoyable. Any charm or potential that Oliver showed in that record has seemingly faded in his newer releases; this album especially.

Despite not being *as* sore of a listen as that god awful "haha funny internet" EP, this album is still pretty fucking bad. There's a few catchy melodies on here, mixed in a bag full of grating performances and the overall tone of the project annoys me - not ... read more

Surprising as it may seem, Oliver Tree has managed to make a whole album that doesn’t include Alien Boy on it once! However, the next hurdle for him is to make an actual decent album on top of this already monumental feat. And while Cowboy Tears still contains the same over-produced and gaudy vocal styles that made Ugly Is Beautiful so mediocre, Oliver’s songwriting makes for a hilarious consolation prize when the majority of the record fails to perform sonically. This sophomore ... read more

Not a terrible sophomore release from Oliver but certainly a creatively stagnant and boringly uniform one. I will admit that the opener "Cowboys Don't Cry" and teaser single "Freaks & Geeks" were the most enjoyable moments for me. Other than that, though, the record was a dumpster fire of recycled country-pop stereotypes mixed with lackluster production and Oliver's genuinely awful vocals. If you don't want to subject yourself to the whole record but wish to at least ... read more

people are acting like this is totally unlistenable, i think people are dunking on this way too hard. (except California that is fucking ass)
...but i'm not saying its great lmao. ugly is beautiful and oliver in general really grew on me in 2020 and 2021, really digging his blending of genres and his persona. but after UiB with the deluxe i was like man what the fuck is this? that deluxe was awful and still is with the exception of like 2 songs. now we got cowboy tears, a blending of country, ... read more

Oliver Tree is a weird artist, and it's not a surprise. His previous album was surprisingly enjoyable: yes, it was a little bit unoriginal but at the same time the character that he portrayed throughout the album and the videos was actually funny. Let's just say that I had a good time while listening to it.

Unfortunately, I cannot say the same about "Cowboy Tears", an album that focuses too heavily on the character rather than the actual music. This time, we have a country boy ... read more

I will still defend Oliver Tree because I do genuinely think he's shown to be one of the more creative and genre-bending artists in pop right now, even if many will hate everything his name is attached to. So despite the negative reception it is receiving I still went into Cowboy Tears open minded, and while it may be ever so slightly overrated, it is pretty warranted this time. First off, Oliver's sudden shift into country music doesn't even have an ounce of country music, which may be a ... read more

The Fall of Oliver Tree.

This is just frustrating.
Oliver was such an entertaining character. His music had a nice profile and the messages that he delivered were normally nice. Ugly Is Beautiful is probably one of my favorite albums of 2020. I feel like Oliver just knew how to make every track deeply emotional to a point where I was using his album to cure my depression and deal with my hatred towards the people that injure me emotionally and psychologically everyday. Feeling Oliver and his ... read more

Just not very good is it? It sounds like a crap rip off of The Shins and Grandaddy. Don't listen to this. Spotify suggested this to me and they are on a final warning right now.

Oliver Tree was not someone I knew going into this album, so I can’t say that knowing more about this online persona would make this more enjoyable, but for what it is, Cowboy Tears is a one trick pony that gets boring real quick. The first three songs “Cowboys Don’t Cry”, “Swing & A Miss”, & “Freaks & Geeks” all have their appealing hooks and interesting cross of indie pop and country, but the rest of them mostly sound similar with ... read more

y'know what? i'm not writing a normal, cohesive review on this album. it isn't good. it's a bad album. the lyricism sucks, the instrumentals are bland and repetitive, and the vocals fine at best. ffs the songs "cigarettes" and "suitcase full of cash" are both extremely out of touch, with oliver trying to make a "statement" with the songs. for goodness sake, oliver said "fill me up with cancer, baby, i can't stop." WHY?! THAT SOUNDS SO FORCED AND OUT OF ... read more
