A great dance-pop record is a marriage of great songs, appealing vocals, and innovative production. Hikaru Utada’s Bad Mode fits that bill. It’s a classy and elegant affair.
Decades into their career, this J-pop superstar continues to evolve—both musically and personally. BADモード reads like a friend’s gentle reminder that we’re always coming into our own.
Bad Mode may tease its renaissance qualities more than it fulfills any of them, but it takes a fair shot at subtly shifting Utada’s goalposts while ticking the boxes of what is, at the end of the day, just another Utada Hikaru album.
Just a reminder for those who are unsure: the regular tracklist contains the first 10 songs. Everything afterwards, starting with “Beautiful World (Da Capo Version),” is a bonus track. It just offers a complete experience, maybe it could ... read more
