AllMusic
Smino continues his blend of several generations of rap styles, R&B, neo-soul, and even hints of psychedelically bent pop, delivering some of the strongest articulations of his sound to date.

Luv 4 Rent is a repeat offender in wooing many hearts with its delicate production and its highs and lows. If there’s two words to describe any Smino album it’s soulful and authentic, and Luv 4 Rent is no different.

The Needle Drop
There's a beautiful purity to what Smino accomplishes on this album.

Pitchfork
The rapper’s third album is an invitation into his domestic sphere in all of its messiness, controversies, and communal joy.

It may not hold any unique attributes, or have a clear general theme for it to really stand out with the other hip hop records of 2022, but it is one of the most accessible and replayable hip-hop records to come out this year.

For example, in theory I really like the whole laid back vibe and aesthetic that Smino is going for with this project, and I really like the sound of the production, but the execution doesn’t fully work for me. I wouldn’t be surprised if this does grow on me a little with more listens though.

Edit: it did grow on me a little, 65 to a 70

"Luv 4 Rent" is an album that 100% relies on vibes, and that's completely okay with me,

I've seen some people say this album is missing a general theme and I do understand that feeling but I feel as if there is a big theme of family, from featuring his cousin to "Defibrillator" which features his relationship with his uncle, so through his impressive list of flows he showcases on this project combined with his cadences and just the overall vibes of this project, I'd say he ... read more
