The Jacket is an excellent foray into dream pop, country, indie, music, textiles, life, the stratosphere.

Mojo

The Jacket is ultimately a meditation on the fleeting highs, dashed hopes and revised ambitions that define most band's careers.

80
The Skinny

Widowspeak’s sixth studio album finds them slick, soulful and effortlessly cool as ever.

80
The Young Folks

Blissful, listeners can find comfort in the smallest of corners of the album. Widowspeak has cultivated a record devoid of cliches, full of honesty, and ripe in heartache.

AllMusic
All of Widowspeak's experience feels channeled into The Jacket's poetic, poignant songs, and after more than a decade together, they're continuing to build one of the quietly great discographies of the 2010s and 2020s.

Northern Transmissions

It is an album that is not showy, but seems to rely on the trust they’ve built with previous albums.

70
Uncut

Instrumental understatement and forlorn romanticism define The Jacket, which features meditations on band history, performance, regret and more.

musicOMH

Molly Hamilton and Robert Earl Thomas’s concept album of sorts turns out to be a very good fit.

God Is in the TV
It is an incredibly solid collection of tracks with good song writing, good lyrics and good production. But that’s the rub, while it’s all good, it never really surpasses that. It never ascends to the upper echelons of brilliance or really sticks and resonates in one’s mind.

Between this and their last one, it would seem Widowspeak have turned a corner. While never a "best of the year" band, they've been consistent in output, just not quality. But with the Jacket it feels like they've hit that target they've been aiming at for a decade. It's not a bullseye but its the closest they've gotten.

If it's not listened with attention, one might get confused every song here was the same song all along... Repetitive but I can't deny it was pretty sweet as well, and at some moments, very beautiful.
