CRITIC REVIEWS

83
Entertainment Weekly

Their fourth album, Need Your Light, might be their most artful and catchiest set yet.

80
NOW Magazine

The 10-year-old band should be able to get a dance floor moving more than ever with these songs.

80
AllMusic

Need Your Light is an ambitious, thrilling album, full of songs that aim to grab your heart as well as your ears.

75
A.V. Club

Sure, musically and lyrically it’s about as daring as Up With People, but now that’s the point, the band has gotten very good at it.

68
Pitchfork

On Need Your Light, they finally hit the sweet spot. Working once again with Rostam, they key back into the chirpy, buoyant electronics of "Can You Discover?" and blend them with the string-heavy compositions of The Rhumb Line.

65
The Line of Best Fit

Need Your Light is a heck of a lot of fun while it lasts and, though there’s little to make you crawl back to it time and time again, it has that same appeal of flicking through a photo album and getting the rush of nostalgia for times long gone.

60
Exclaim!

Need Your Light is certainly a step up from Beta Love, but Ra Ra Riot are missing the orchestral edge that originally set them apart from other groups in their genre, making it feel inessential despite being quite likeable.

50
Consequence of Sound

Judged so long against who they might be next, what they might sound like under the right circumstances with the right producer, Ra Ra Riot can now only be held against themselves. The results are mixed, surely, but not anything other than what they are.

50
PopMatters

Need Your Light clings stubbornly to a spotlight on songwriting and band format that others of their former cohort, like Vampire Weekend and Dirty Projectors, pursued exceptionally. Most tracks feel caught in between the two. Like some kind of indie pop puberty.

45
Under The Radar

Need Your Light will please loyal Ra Ra Riot fans, but despite its slick, bouncy energy, it doesn't make much of a splash.

40
DIY

At times, it sounds shallow and bland, with little on ‘Need Your Light’ truly stirring, nor does it provoke any real emotional response.

If you can manage to listen to "Need Your Light" all the way through--congratulations, I couldn't. Like club soda, it contains nothing aside from the occasional carbonation with bubbles rising to the surface. This bubbly sound is further intensified by the frequent vocal falsetto that after a few songs, becomes nothing more than a high-pitched screech.

Notable Song: Nothing to note
