The Line of Best Fit
What makes them special is that it’s organic. Their music is an extension of themselves, pure id, and that’s what makes them so enthralling.
Drowned in Sound

Studiously crafted and meticulously executed from start to finish, if any doubts remained as to whether Fat White Family were the most important rock and roll band of their generation, this should put a lid on it once and for all. For Songs for Our Mothers is of a rare breed of record that's both of its time yet timeless in nature.

The majority of this 46-minute album is gripping, a sickening start to the year.
‘Songs For Our Mothers’ impresses for all the right reasons. Fans will welcome some of the new songs as the band’s very best. Fat White Family prove that despite the co-opting of rock and roll into the establishment there’s still bite in the old dog yet.

Like Champagne Holocaust, Songs for Our Mothers puts too much emphasis on setting the smoky, sinister scene—upping the reverb, working in odd yelps or electronic clatter—and too little attention on establishing dynamic, compelling arrangements.

The Guardian

Fat White Family clearly think rock music needs a bomb putting under it, and they’ve got a point. Yet Songs for Our Mothers feels like a bomb that only partially detonates.

NOW Magazine
Though murky mixing obscures their incendiary songs, the overall mood of disquiet and anxiety is potent (perhaps prescient?). If only they could shape it into something with more of a jolt.
Translating decadence, drugs, nudity and flour bombs into an audio only performance is a hard ask and it’s fair to say that as yet, the Fat Whites have not worked out how to make a satisfying recording of their electrifying performances.

Songs for Our Mothers indicates Fat White Family still want to annoy you, but they're only going to put real effort into it for so long.

No Ripcord
In some instances, the juxtaposition of horrific subject matter with calculated soundscapes is ominously unsettling, but for the most part just bores you to tears.
Often aimless, it’s a collection of songs that belongs miles below the dingiest, most unpalatable of pissed-stained bars. A formula of chugged bass lines and pointlessly stabby guitars persists, right up to the point where Fat Whites become an incomprehensible mess barely worth acknowledging.
