Mojo

Hutson spins yarns with a dizzying lexicon of wordplay and imagery, but explanations aren't part of his deal.

The Irish Times

Somehow these songs, even those with rough edges, are infused with a real sense of humanity, their black humour cocking a snook at an indifferent world.

Pitchfork

With help from Phoebe Bridgers and Conor Oberst, the California songwriter tells conversational, painfully precise stories of sad sacks, lost souls, hopeless drunks, and ex-boyfriends.

Uncut

His honeyed, Elliott Smith-esque vocal adds to the lush warmth of spare but forceful arrangements, softening the blows soaked up by his songs’ baffled and blitzed Angelenos.

The Line of Best Fit

When Hutson is at his most unguarded and vulnerable, he makes for one of his generation’s strongest songwriters.

AllMusic

Christian Lee Hutson manages to make you care about him and his life even as he artfully reveals his darkest side on Quitters, and while it's hard to tell if he thinks California really is beautiful or if he's one of the doubters, he tells his stories well enough that you'll follow this LP to the end as you try to figure it out.

With yes, witty lyrical asides that jar smartly with his seemingly timeless sound. Both Phoebe and Conor pop up in the background on occasion, and the pair’s insistence on recording to tape only serves to amp up the sonic warmth.

EDIT: Some of yall sound really fucking stupid like you live in a world where phoebe is the only folk singer alive

Just like his previous LP, Hutson is one of my favorite ps out there in folk rn because he is consistent and captures that sad indie mood better than a lot of contemporaries out there. I just saw him open for Bright Eyes the other day and it was a very good set. Albums like this prove that even in 2022, folk doesn’t have to be overly ambitious if the writing and performance ... read more

I’m just gonna jump into it. I don’t care for this too much, and I think it comes down to his delivery and lyrics. Here, Hutson writes very detailed and specific lyrics, much like a very popular and acclaimed female singer-songwriter you might know. But yet for some reason I love Phoebe Bridgers’ music while I only find this to be fine. But then I had a thought, if Phoebe Bridgers were to sing these exact lyrics over the same instrumentation, I’m sure I’d like it ... read more

It's good but it kinda feels like a pale Phoebe Bridgers imitation
