brazen invention born of desolation and abandonment, this is a record about "going away" that proved Mercury Rev was here to stay. a studio twin of The Soft Bulletin by the Flaming Lips (the records shared the same producer and the bands shared the same studio while making the records simultaneously), it is gloriously expansive and unashamedly cinematic in its moods and soundscapes. top songs are "Opus 40" and "Goddess on a Hiway", but there are few songs that can ... read more
