MAN PLAYS THE HORN

This is some of the most creative hip-hop I've ever heard; it sort of sounds like a more abrasively experimental sLUms project. There's so much going on and so many ideas explored without sacrificing cohesion. The off-beat rapping perfectly complements even the most unorthodox beats here. The first ten-track run is almost flawless. While the following 12-minute instrumental centrepiece is itself impressive, it squanders the album's momentum going into the less consistent second half.

Every day the underground gets ever closer to "Post Hip-Hop"; this project being a key example. And while definitely not to the level that Slauson Malone achieved with "A Quiet Farwell", "MAN PLAYS THE HORN" certainly makes a large mind fuck statement with its masterful sample flips and avant-garde writing style hap-hazardly sprinkled throughout the record.

The long run time is a bit intimidating but this projects stays fresh and interesting throughout. Cities Aviv has been hanging around for a while but this feels like his most cohesive, strongest project (despite being undeniably un-cohesive and experimental). Really genre-pushing stuff.
