Entertainment Weekly

It’s a durable, malleable passport to hedonism—loud when you want it to be, just funky enough, capable of holding up to headphone scrutiny.

St. Lucia's splendid synth-pop allure has instant pop catchiness, but Grobler's willingness to wear his lyrics' romantic motivations like a badge of honor gives Matter a thrilling extra jolt.

Ultimately, Matter is an uplifting, hooky album that makes synthy, '80s romance sound as fresh as ever.

Rolling Stone

While Grobler's music often bursts with light, frivolous energy, this album has an undertone of dissatisfaction that's new.

Grobler hopes to get by on our sense of nostalgia and perhaps what's proven to be hip in the past, but an imitation of cool doesn't necessarily equal cool.

It’s a shame that St. Lucia’s work is riddled by persistently criminal overproduction and weak moments. Though Grobler has certainly shown his faults here, he’s also showcased his considerable talents. It’ll be interesting to see how he adapts and what he comes back with.

Consequence of Sound

The world Grobler crafts on Matter isn’t colored with the iridescent shades of blue from his early career; it is now a palate so bright and garish that it hurts the eyes.

In some ways a better and more consistent compilation than their first album, it didn't have an Elevate-caliber track, which may have thrown some people off. But it's solid fun and creative synth pop.
The follow up to the debut of st lucia 2013 when the night brought back the 80s in style and jean phillip gobler has not failed once again with his Brooklyn based band follow up album matter.Home is the stand out song of the album.Matter is a stand out and shows how far the band have travelled since breaking onto the scene
With his strong and intense 80's dance hooks, St. Lucia's Matter is this record that feels more like a tribute to that era than a progress on Gobler's sound. It is pretty catchy in some tunes and the lyrics are fun, but the instrumentals tend to be predictable and the lenght of almost all the tracks is overlong for no reason. I'm really doubting my father would even enjoy this and he's a fan of this genre. I guess it could've been worse.
