Chk Chk Chk’s identity crisis continues: Let It Be Blue is another glorious mess that could be by a different band to the one that put out Wallop in 2019.
I’ve heard quite a bit about this band from some people on the internet. So, I jumped into this album… and Im a bit mixed on it. '!!!', 'CHK CHK CHK', 'the band with the unpronounceable name' or whatever, bursts in again after a three-year absence with an heterogeneous, complex but enjoyable ninth studio album. After 20 years on the scene, many of us are still wondering why this band doesn't end up shining as expected, just like others with shorter careers.
I don’t understand the hype. This is largely-passable ‘weird dance music’ at best, and very annoying at that: a lot of the synths are pounding and the wild eclecticism is just zany, and comes off like try-harding. Elsewhere, the interpolation of R.E.M.’s “Man on the Moon” on track 7 is rubbish, none of the lyrics are very meaningful and - perhaps most importantly for a dance record - the general grooves are pretty average.
