I’ve heard quite a bit about this band from some people on the internet. So, I jumped into this album… and Im a bit mixed on it. On one hand, tracks like “A Little Bit” and “Here’s What I Need To Know” are dance punk bangers, with some really fun vocals and production to boot! '!!!', 'CHK CHK CHK', 'the band with the unpronounceable name' or whatever, bursts in again after a three-year absence with an heterogeneous, complex but enjoyable ninth studio album. After 20 years on the scene, many of us are still wondering why this band doesn't end up shining as expected, just like others with shorter careers.
I don’t understand the hype. This is largely-passable ‘weird dance music’ at best, and very annoying at that: a lot of the synths are pounding and the wild eclecticism is just zany, and comes off like try-harding. Elsewhere, the interpolation of R.E.M.’s “Man on the Moon” on track 7 is rubbish, none of the lyrics are very meaningful and - perhaps most importantly for a dance record - the general grooves are pretty average.
