NME

The super-producer's sixth album takes you on a journey to a star-studded boogie wonderland – with Dua Lipa, Justin Timberlake and more in tow.

Evening Standard
With the help of an A-List cast including Dua Lipa and Justin Timberlake, Harris’ first album in five years is a sure summer smash.

The Line of Best Fit

Despite this picture perfect setting, it’s inevitable that as soon as the orange sunsets turn to orange leaves, Funk Wav Bounces Vol.2 will just collect dust until the summer sun rears its head next year.

70
Rolling Stone
Everyone from Dua Lipa to Justin Timberlake to Snoop Dogg is on board for a very smooth ride.

Spectrum Culture

After a five-year wait, Calvin Harris’ Funk Wav Bounces Vol. 2 ends up largely forgettable. There are a few groovy, disco-pop tracks that might be able to serve him a hit, while the others are repetitive and could have used more pronounced vigor.

AllMusic
Calvin Harris can still craft a catchy earworm, and these songs are pleasing enough. However, the bulk of the effort consists of tracks that are interchangeable at best and forgettable at worst.

Clash

The record is funky, it might sound good near some waves, and the beats generally bounce happily along. It does what it says on the tin.

60
The Telegraph
A hazy collection of groove-driven vocal tracks featuring singers and rappers.
60
The Observer
A-list guests including Dua Lipa, Jorja Smith and Stefflon Don provide the high points on the Scot’s quality funk follow-up.
52
Pitchfork
Borrowing from disco, electro-soul, boogie, and 1980s R&B, vibe commissioner Calvin Harris’ second volume of frictionless summer jams has the staying power of vape smoke at Coachella.

The biggest victim of fan-capture since Misery’s Paul Sheldon follows up Funk Wav Bounces Vol 1 with star names from Stefflon Don and Snoop Dogg to Justin Timberlake and Pharrell.

43
Beats Per Minute
As the songs outlive their shelf life by the end of summer, they will inevitably turn stale and be discarded. Detractors have long said that Harris’ music is tailor made for background summer playlists you can ignore – listening to this project, it’s hard to disagree.

Slant Magazine
The Scottish DJ’s latest album has a few superficial charms going for it—and not much else.
40
The Guardian
Harris enlists Dua Lipa, Justin Timberlake, Pharrell, Halsey and others for a second round of slinky disco-pop, but his luxurious production doesn’t disguise the dullness of the songs.

Calvin Harris spices up his Funk Volume series by matching up artists with others that seem like they wouldn’t be seen in a 1000 mile radius of each other. The result of this is mixed. I overall enjoyed seeing how the artists would interact in these tracks together more than I would if it was just predictable pairings. I appreciate the strong vibe this album has as well, going for a chill background vibe with a massive guest list. Not as memorable as Vol 1, but a valiant effort

While “Funk Wav Bounces Vol. 2” isn’t bad and has some solid aspects, its overall just really inoffensive and safe, and as a result it ends up being pretty underwhelming and disappointing.

Coming into this album, I was actually pretty intrigued. I thought Vol. 1 from 2017 had some really great highlights, and I was hoping that this would as well. However, I really wasn’t into the singles for this album outside of “New To You”, which was completely carried by ... read more

Decently put together little list of songs that are good for a summer playlist.
