The Needle Drop

Otoboke Beaver cranks up the rage and intensity on Super Champon without losing any of their original appeal.

The Japanese quartet returns louder, faster, and fiercer, tearing through 18 hilarious and ferocious songs in 20 minutes.

ANOTHER OTOBOKE BEAVER BANGER
The cover of this album says it all: all colourful killer, no filler. Super Champion is a rainbow blasted pressure cooker where even the negative space just boosts the aggression, consistently with a wild sense of humour that transcends language barriers.
While maybe not as well sequenced a project as Itekoma Hits was (and let's face it - a scant few albums are), Super Champion is another worthy addition to the growing catalogue of this scary, funny and ... read more

I was worried this was just going to be a repeat of their last album
But this feels like a very well executed continuation of Itekoma Hits
The guitars and vocals are throttling
And the melodies are super fun and catchy
I just wish some of the songs were longer

I'm not the biggest hater of this noise rock thing but I ain't getting the sound of 'Super Champon' neither their purposes or the hype this is receiving. It'd be better if they decided to release a 21 minutes-long single than this bunch of nonsense and messy songs. I can't even name a single track I enjoyed or it's a highlight, they're so unfinished and whatever these women tried to do with this project, I just don't get it at all.

Which is great, because what's playing is usually great. The energy packed into this album is ridiculous. The playing is ferocious, constantly switching ... read more

amazing production and mixing, everything is so raw but crisp at the same time

now onto the bad: literally everything else

instrumentals are manic and wild in ways that feel like they should be really exciting and compelling but are instead just very grating and one-note, falling flat and doing nothing of interest. The vocals are also monumentally irritating and obnoxious the whole way through, capturing none of the enthralling energy this genre typically has, instead just becoming repetitive ... read more
