CRITIC REVIEWS

100
Louder Than War
The festival queen Florence returns with an album of fierce and poignant songs inspired by plagues past and present.
100
Spill Magazine

Those that are familiar with her past body of work will likely feel the exact same way about Dance Fever as they have with any other Florence + The Machine album prior – lots to adore but very little to remember.

100
The Telegraph

Welch’s self-mythologising is extravagant, her poetic language overloaded, yet her lush music binds it all into something magical on songs that exploit explicitly female archetypes to examine her own psyche.

100
The Independent

In its commitment to euphoria, Dance Fever is an album that looks forward to the release of all the pandemic’s pent-up energy at this summer’s festivals, where (like the medieval market square jiggers) we can dance until we drop.

90
Gigwise
Put perfectly by Florence, this is "grand self-mythology", spinning round magic and character until she has to land on herself.
90
The Line of Best Fit

Dance Fever feels like Welch’s biggest change of course in a decade.

90
Clash
Balancing a dramatic soundtrack with heartfelt emotion, Florence + the Machine invite you into their fever dream. A dance party to release your demons to, they cast yet another lyrically beautiful and musically capitulating spell.
80
Evening Standard

She’s far from the banshee of old, but this latest development is always absorbing.

80
Albumism

The mercurial Dance Fever is a chaotic return to form from more than just a ceaselessly stellar vocalist, and it is Florence + The Machine’s best album in a decade.

80
Dork
Proof that absence can make the heart grow fonder, ‘Dance Fever’ is an album straining at its leash, dreaming of the freedom of the dancefloor.
80
The Observer
The singer spares no details on her confessional, pared-back fifth album with nods to Madonna and the Stones.
80
Mojo
Rather than falling between the two stools, she's taken a great leap forward at the very moment one was required.
80
Exclaim!
Welch's powerful vocals shine on this record through anthemic synthpop, baroque pop and folk balladry, as the band experiment with new textures, aligning with the inspiration drawn from the Pre-Raphaelite tradition of embracing contrast within art.
80
DIY
A welcome shot of fairy-tale hedonism ripe for post-pandemic dancefloor indulgence.
80
Paste

When a band have been so focused on their brand for as long as Florence + The Machine have, it’s easy for them to box themselves in, muting their power; instead, Dance Fever is the sound of a band finding an escape route, rediscovering what makes them special.

80
NME
Pain and euphoria collide on album five, as Florence crafts huge choruses to explore her evolving relationship with dance.
80
AllMusic

While this effort may not be Welch's surprise transformation into a full-on pop diva, Dance Fever is a generous offering to the goddesses of dance and restorative energy.

musicOMH
Florence Welch’s fifth album is a startling return, full of all the elements which made us sit up and take notice of her in the first place
71
Pitchfork
Florence Welch’s pandemic album turns her intensity inward, interrogating her relationship to performance and public image. These are her most personal lyrics, and among her most poignant.
70
Northern Transmissions
‘Dance Fever’ is reflective of now; a time to celebrate overcoming shared trauma after a period of uncertainty and reflection. Scars and all.
70
Rolling Stone
The latest Florence + the Machine LP is an ecstatic prayer for post-pandemic redemption.
70
Spectrum Culture
Florence Welch’s pandemic album finds the artist looking inward even while she’s unable to suppress the compulsion to break free from isolation.
70
PopMatters
Creating their most conceptual, theatrical work, Florence + the Machine air out their lockdown grievances and ugly feelings by reminding us all to dance it out.
60
The Irish Times
Yes, this is a pop album by a major artist – but could it mark the beginning of a new, slightly weirder era of Florence and the Machine?
40
The Arts Desk
It’s all a bit proggy, at times a bit folky, very atmospheric and quintessentially English in many ways.

... read more

'Dance Fever' is a project with feeling and rhythm, which reflects the band's state of mind and the desire to change and find new ways of making art without losing their essence.

The album starts with the excellent "King" which has the production of Jack Antonoff who manages to work perfectly with Florence + The Machine to convey a song that elevates the band's potential. One of the phrases that most impacted me during the entire album was "the very thing you're best at is the ... read more
