The soundtrack's main theme is a foreboding sequence of intermittent, simple and sombre string arrangements that masterfully foreshadow the film's tragic story of an American fur trapper left for dead.

The best thing you can say about a score is that it can stand on its own, film or no film. The Revenant can not only stand on its own but can also be taken as an electro-acoustic experiment in ambient music, where the natural and the synthetic don’t enjoy convenient boundaries.

Under The Radar

Sakamoto has sought opportunities for avant garde composition his whole career and with comparable enthusiasm, engaged collaborations with composers of like sensibilities. The Revenant satisfied both criteria for him and he delivered an epic score to Iñárritu.

Consequence of Sound

The Revenant is a tiring score because it traces Glass’ desperate clinging to life, physically, emotionally, and mentally.

Alejandro G. Iñárritu's new film The Revenant ... is a meditation on the unholy perserverance of the human soul. Yet its soundtrack ... wisely opts to complement that savagery rather than illustrate it.
