Whole Lotta Reverb

Edit (55 - > 75): Going in with the reference that it is Slowcore helps a lot. It feels very dragged out. there are some huge highlights in the second half. Not an album I am jumping for joy here, but I can see how my first impression was not really fully reflective of the whole experience.

brutal and unnerving storytelling, bass and riffs you can feel in the back of your spine and brain, deep cuts that go straight through the heart. ethel cain is a product of all the lana del reys and nico dollangangers of the world just a tad more polished and focused. this being her debut album but sounds like she has years of experience behind her with this album. cant wait what this woman has in store for us.

This album and the first album from Horsegirl are my top two most anticipated debuts of the year. I have listened to the singles on a constant daily loop since they have been out and now that the album is here it totally transcends everything I imagined and hoped for it to be.

First of all, no, this is not any kind of false persona fakery. Hayden Silas Anhedönia/Ethel Cain is everything most of those other “artists” are not, never were, and never could be. Forget about Banks ... read more

Hallelujah!

Ethel Cain is an artist who has the makings to be an artist that I love but for some reason she’s never really done it for me. But I think this album changes that.

“Preacher’s Daughter” is an incredibly well rounded, fully fleshed out project that not only lives up to expectations, but surpasses them in some respects. Ethel’s spent a lot of time establishing a distinct, old time-y dream like aesthetic, and this album is the perfect embodiment of that. ... read more

After listening to many dream pop records including this one I've come to the conclusion that maybe I'm just not a dream pop person this was boring as hell almost put me to sleep

and the funny part about this is that I can see how people would like this but damn was this was a frustrating listen.

I like Family Tree though I guess that's something

The worst part about this record for me is that the album cover looks so good, makes it even more devastating to listen for me at least

πŸ† Awarded with Bloom Bop, my badge of musical elegance!

Hayden Anhedönia is a rare gem in the pop goldfield; only few artists release their debut as daring and monumental as hers. π˜—π˜³π˜¦π˜’𝘀𝘩𝘦𝘳'𝘴 π˜‹π˜’π˜Άπ˜¨π˜©π˜΅π˜¦π˜³, a record that creates a majestic world for itself, is a novella compressed into 13 religiously inventive songs that may be a harbinger of something strikingly revolutionary to come.

Kiddo, if it's not a genre you enjoy, don't force yourself to listen to it even if it's "hyped" or "really liked". Many (users or some critics) have the conception that you "need" to listen every genres and everything that is "trendy" at the moment.

You don't need.

This is great for a debut and I'm glad it's receiving so much acclaim but it hasn't clicked for me. The more accessible parts are too derivative for me (e.g. 'American Teenager' sounds like Lawson's 'Standing In The Dark' but less catchy). The more ambitious, longer tracks aren't as dark, harrowing or reverbed as I expected. Her voice and song-writing are strong and she does a good job of building tension but even her vocals sometimes sound derivative of Florence Welch for example.

This is fantastic.

Ptolemaea is one of those songs that you just sit in awe after the song concludes and think about what you just heard. I'm speechless. Such an incredible song.

I can definitely say that this is one of my favorite albums of all time.

Honestly I get what it’s going for and I think it is a very well rounded body of work but it doesn’t do much for me. I really enjoyed “American Teenager” and probably would’ve liked the album more if it sounded more like that but the really slow and lengthy cuts just bored me to death, and Ethel's vocal delivery isn’t that special or interesting either, even though her songwriting ability is great. I think doing the slowcore, reverb heavy thing is fine for ... read more

Probably not a project I’ll revisit too often because of how drawn out it is but it is a wonderful experience of an album. The long and drawn out nature of this album adds to the sense of unease, tension and eerieness of the story being told here. It feels emotional and impactful and is a great way to debut yourself as an artist.

Ethel Cain’s debut is haunting, gorgeous and jaw dropping. Her excellent, narratively driven songwriting and ethereal sound is so intimate in detail of her experiences on each track. It’s, also, hard not to feel transported into the American Gothic setting she’s clearly inspired by; from her album cover to the range of genres she implements fantastically. A must hear of 2022.

We've got our first contender for album of the decade.

This album is incredible. It's cinematic and over time, it draws you in more and more. The soundscapes are beautiful, her voice is beautiful, and the picture the lyrics paint throughout the album are beautiful, disturbing, and heart-wrenching. And the final work is greater than the sum of its parts. I was enjoying the album, but Ptolemaea really drew me in, and from that point onwards my attention was fully captured by the album. final review:
pardon me ethel cain now what the fuck. i had literally never heard of you until 2 days ago yet you are absolutely dominating my music library rn.

"preachers daughter" is a debut album that feels like ethel cains third. this is the album teenage singer-songwriters release a decade into their career in order to be perceived as "mature". her sweet ... read more
