From a distance, I had a feeling I would love this album. And while clocking in at a staggering, intense hour and 15 minutes, Ethel over-delivers. This is a visually intense, crushing, narrative driven album that is absolutely not for the faint of heart. Sex, drugs, sexual abuse, murder, the open road, the American Dream, and more are crammed into this monolithic release. Ethel also touches down on numerous genres, from classic Singer-Songwriter material, to blisteringly gloomy SlowCore, ... read more

A heady, hazy blend of Lana del Rey and Florence. Southern Gothic gloom and grace flows through the veins in a variety of styles

Standouts: American Teenager, A House In Nebraska, Hard Times, Thoroughfare, Gibson Girl, Western Nights, Family Tree, Sun Bleached Flies, Strangers, Family Tree (Intro)

Dropouts: Ptolemaea

i live in la but I bought a ticket to her pheonix show for the end of august and and i can't wait to drive through the desert and stay in a motel to see her, seems only right. as an angsty trans girl i love when angsty trans girls make music wtf. she is only getting better and better with each project. American Teenager is fucking iconic, and Thoroughfare is truly a masterpiece. 9/10

Recently renamed Ethel, is stretching her creative muscles on 'Preacher's Daughter'. She lets her americana aesthetic take over and dwell into long soundscapes, mostly lasting between 6 and 9 minutes. That's what debuts are for I guess, but to the more inattentive listener, its 76 minutes may become exhaustive.

The Preacher's Daughter secretly listens Lana del Rey's records.

Highlights: "Family Tree (Intro)", "American Teenager", "Family Tree", "Sun Bleached Flies", "Televangelism"

A beautiful blend between a folklore approach and dream pop, the project doesn't feel overwhelming even considering the longer tracks. Creates, instead, momentum and excitement that is carried notoriously from start to finish.

Standout tracks: A House in Nebraska, Family Tree, Hard Times, Televangelism.

I'm a music director at a college radio station and I got this album from a promoter. I gave a few tracks a quick listen and filed it under folk music in our library. Later, I was running the new music show. I pulled up Preacher's Daughter and picked Ptolemaea. For the next six minutes, I sat in disbelief listening to the nightmare that was this song. I loved it! I decided to give the whole album a listen, eager to hear what was in store for me. I have to report back that I'm sorely ... read more

Preacher’s Daughter is a haunting and emotional ride. Ethel’s storytelling is beautiful and the sound of this album just sucks you into the world that’s being created and it becomes something cinematic. this is one of the best dream pop albums i’ve heard, with the mix of slowcore and indie folk. i absolutely love every track off of this but if i had to pick one standout track, it would be Ptolemaea. one of the most unique songs i’ve heard this year so far (and the ... read more

Tracks i liked: All of them.

This is some raw stuff, made me feel uneasy, anxious, horribly sad and angry as fuck, but at the same time always interested in what was coming next. That's how you make a conceptual album, cheers for her, amazing work.

Por favor, caí acá casi de casualidad. Un viaje por la oscuridad y buscando aunque sea un atisbo de luz y belleza. Estoy realmente maravillado. Una mezcla de americana, con folk rock con solos/riffs de guitarra que son de otra era.

Some pleasing slowcore textures here and there, but no exciting songcraft to speak of. "Thoroughfare" nearly had it, but the writing falls flat for me, despite frequent tonal threats not to.

If you described this album's premise, story, and sound to me, I would've guessed it'd turn out cheesy in practice. But it hasn't. I think for that alone, it totally deserves the praise it gets. "Cinematic" is a fitting description of it. It sounds like an hour-long mood piece, but a thoroughly enjoyable one that I've found myself wanting to sit through again and again.
It might seem like a blur at first but it does have its highlights. Elsewhere, it doesn't hit any significant lows. ... read more

I cried, I was speechless, I was touched, I felt hope.
Exceptional ability to write huge statements, hymns with grandiose endings, the lyrical and conceptual side of this project is interesting and promising in the context of upcoming albums. „Preacher’s Daughter” instantly made me a fan of Ethel Cain.

A plodding, over the top affair that overstays its welcome. Look, I like cinematic, dramatic songs but this is absurd. There is nothing Americana about this. At it's worst it sounds like Evanescence. At it's best ("Strangers", "Sun Bleached Flies") it is a wistful and lush affair. Didn't Lingua Ignota release an album last year that is thematically similar and executed much better? We get it. Religious upbringing bad. Repressive and isolating.

The 2nd half is better. I ... read more

Ethel Cain's debut is an art pop album; That is also a indie rock album; Somehow an americana soundtrack; Truly a folk record; But mostly a very dense and dark poetic magnitude, that is constantly changing throughout its tracks. This is a project that has body, spirit and soul (a very disturbed trio btw).

Despite the album's shifting tones throughout the runtime, I quickly overlooked this mere gripe (which is even hard to say) in favor of the cinematic production carrying an otherwise simplistic narrative. Acting as a cautionary tale, this album flawlessly explores many kinds of love—and how they shape and direct the MC's life; along for the ride are themes of regret, religion, and identity, all of which establish a haunting yet beautiful character study. Throughout its three-act ... read more

not my speed
a slowcore album more likely to be enjoyed by a Taylor Swift or Lana Del Rey fan than an actual slowcore fan. I really respect Cain’s ambitions and storytelling on this record but overall sound of this record is just not something I enjoy at all. Probably would’ve appreciated less processing on the vocals, either way though her voice is a little grating to me. Just not my thing☹️

i wanna give this a 100 but the middle section was just good when the rest was mind blowing, earth shattering, world changing, heart stopping, breath taking, galvanizing
