Clash
‘Broken Hearts Club’ - performed, co-written and co-produced by Syd – feels like definitive moment as the R&B mainstay truly settles into her solo endeavour.

The Young Folks

Skilled at creating slow-burn melodies, Syd’s angel-like disposition delivers marvelous results on Broken Hearts Club. An intimate story and a solid addition to her ever-growing discography.

80
Gigwise
Throughout, Syd effortlessly scoops the insecurity, turmoil, and pain of modern love onto a record that fuses '80s synth with R&B and radio-friendly pop.
80
NME
Album two was conceived as a collection of love songs – until heartache struck. The result oscillates between braggadocio and deep intimacy.
80
DIY
It’s vulnerable, it’s heartfelt, and above all it feels real.

The Telegraph

Broken Hearts Club is an expertly sequenced, perfectly packaged ode to a lost love.

80
Rolling Stone
The frontwoman for alt-R&B darlings The Internet unfurls a epic tale of love and loss with lush production.

AllMusic

The lack of uninhibited gloating and easy-going funk grooves disqualify Broken Hearts Club from being considered Syd's most characteristic and definitive work. It could become the one that is most cherished -- a skip-less companion for listeners going through or getting over their first real love.

Pitchfork
Syd reshapes heartbreak into pillowy, ’80s-nodding R&B on her second album, softening her sound while maintaining vulnerability in her songwriting.
60
The Observer
The US singer-songwriter’s intimate second solo album is a mixed bag of featherlight vocals and strong collaborations.

Crack Magazine

At times, Broken Hearts Club doesn’t quite stack up to some of Syd’s most brilliant moments. But like surreptitiously reading someone’s diary, you’re left with an indelible impression of an artist at their rawest.

Not what I was anticipating from Syd all this time since her last album; leaving behind the vibey trap-R&B ambient vamping synth sounds for a more contemporary R&B bouncy summer sound influenced by 80's synthpop. The resulting album is still sonically enjoyable enough, but nothing exciting whatsoever; not what Internet fans want and doesnt take many risks or go into much depth. Overall a major letdown but I still like syd.
