CRITIC REVIEWS

100
The Skinny

Atomic picks up where the krauty electronic wash that coloured Rave Tapes left off, and sees the band brandishing some of their most compelling work to date.

90
PopMatters
Ever ambitious even at their most laid back, Mogwai are a band like fellow trouble makers Mercury Rev who manage to keep astounding release after release, however hard they try to also make us shake our heads and laugh.
90
musicOMH

At this point in Mogwai’s history, it’d be unreasonable to expect any kind of seismic shift in direction, but what they’ve done with Atomic is refine their methods to create something that could just possibly be the highlight of the career to date.

Exclaim!

Fans of 2014's Rave Tapes and that year's Music Industry 3. Fitness Industry 1. EP won't find anything to dislike here, as Atomic perfectly captures the band's recent progressions, ... and is undoubtedly one of the most consistent albums front-to-back from Mogwai's two-decade-long career.

80
DIY
With their offering, Mogwai prove once more that, after more than twenty years, they’re a constantly evolving beast of a band.
80
AllMusic

Ambitious and masterful, Atomic is another peak in Mogwai's career.

75
A.V. Club
When the apocalypse does come, let’s at least rest assured that we’ve got the perfect soundtrack for it.
75
Consequence of Sound

Atomic succeeds because of the band’s willingness to dive into their muse and experiment. It’s why they’ve achieved such high status in the sub-genre. By taking on a subject larger than themselves, Mogwai are able to lose their identity in telling such a tragic story.

71
Pitchfork

Like all good concept albums (and soundtracks), Atomic’s sole allegiance is to its subject. And when you’re dealing with the pinnacle of human innovation and the symbol of death, that subject deserves to take center stage.

70
The Line of Best Fit

Atomic doesn’t quite hit the heights of their greatest soundtrack successes, but as a further document of a restlessly inventive band constantly tweaking their sound, it’s well worth approaching with open ears.

70
Drowned in Sound

More so than either Rave Tapes or Les Revenants, Atomic is a soft reset that will allow the band to move in new directions in the future.

70
Tiny Mix Tapes

There’s nothing wrong with Atomic. If you like this sort of thing, you’ll probably think it’s as good as Mogwai’s other work; if you’re aware of their career trajectory, it will mean something specific in that respect, too.

70
Under The Radar

Punctuated by an homage to scoring legend John Carpenter in "Weak Force," and anchored by the slow, slumbering percussive movements reminiscent of the band's early work, Atomic is a refinement of Mogwai's already fluent dramatic instrumental expressionism.

60
The Guardian

Atomic feels lighter than usual: sunlit synths dapple Little Boy; minimal piano patters through the techno-edged U-235; and Are You a Dancer’s delicate, balletic strings are sublime.

On their new record, the great Mogwai seems to look back instead of taking a step forward (which has been kind of a trend in recent post-rock releases from once relevant names of the genre). While not really distancing themselves from their roots, the band dwelves into some brighter territory, blending their usual atmospheric, grand instrumentals with some pale electronic soundscapes, most of which follow some dated formulas from late 70s progressive-electronic à la Tangerine Dream. ... read more
