CRITIC REVIEWS

100
Albumism
It cements Soccer Mommy as one of the most exciting voices in indie pop, and it’s a record I’ll be coming back to all summer long.
100
The Skinny
Expertly navigating an ocean of stylistic and lyrical juxtapositions, Soccer Mommy’s third album serves as a modern mercurial masterpiece.
90
The Line of Best Fit

Though Allison never fully finds closure on Sometimes, Forever – or at least not for very long – its very existence is a testament to its creator’s continued survival, and the music contained within is a reminder that even in their darkest moments, the listener is never alone – and need never be without hope.

90
Exclaim!

Sometimes, Forever is a rich and varied album, with ultramodern production that never tramples the influences at play.

85
Paste
The Nashville indie-rock group’s Oneohtrix Point Never-produced third album is their most creative work to date, and sacrifices none of their signature sound.
85
Under the Radar
It’s a record that operates in extremes, with the highs ascending to ultra-catchy pop bliss and the lows exploring barren depths of depression. Each emotion and each moment is transient, leading seamlessly into the next in an overwhelming rush.
82
Sputnikmusic

Sometimes, Forever is the most colorful album of Allison’s career, but once all her skeletons are revealed, that’s when she’ll reach her true peak. Until that moment arrives, this is the most convincing and complete package from Soccer Mommy to date.

80
Rolling Stone
On her third album, Sophie Allison proves herself to be one of the sharpest songwriters around.
80
Dork
The title itself alludes to the cyclic nature of life, and that applies to art too: ‘Sometimes, Forever’ is a versatile exploration of opposing states, so don’t go into this delightfully diverse journey expecting an easy ride.
80
Upset
It’s an album of laid-back indie splendour, and despite being her third full-length in just four years, Soccer Mommy is showing no signs of fatigue.
80
The Telegraph

Sometimes, Forever, though on the whole a rockier, more grown up record, still has its moments of teenage innocence: Shotgun and Feel It All The Time seem like continuations of the biggest singles from color theory, royal screw up and circle the drain, that became sad anthems for disenchanted youth.

80
Northern Transmissions

On this album ... we see Allison collaborating to add extra layers of depth and artistry to her already deeply artistic songwriting and it’s extremely rewarding.

80
Crack Magazine

Where color theory dipped its toes into sombre and sacrilegious imagery, Sometimes, Forever dives in headfirst. Motifs of blood, bones, fire and demons sneak into nearly every track.

80
Mojo
The Nashville Indie rocker's deep soul mining strikes gold.
80
Uncut

Sophie Allison's ascent from teenage bedroom-pop savant to incisive chronicler of Gen Z angst hits a crescendo on Sometimes, Forever, an improbable but rewarding collaboration with Oneohtrix Point Never's Daniel Lopatin.

80
The Guardian

Sophie Allison’s impressive follow-up to Color Theory sets emotional gridlock, the supernatural and apocalyptic despair to sweet melody and cold gusts of noise.

80
Clash
From the way she embellishes tracks with tambourines and electronic flourishes, ‘Sometimes, Forever’ is a marker of a completely new era.
80
Pitchfork
As the shadows deepen on Sophie Allison’s third album, she sees into the lie on the other side of success: You can win, but you still have to live with yourself.
80
Gigwise
For the most part, the album is all the better for its wide scope and experimental approach, providing fertile ground for some of Allison’s most heartfelt songwriting to date. Daringly vulnerable and vocally impeccable, she still has us hanging on every word.
80
DIY
She veers from one sonic pole to another in thrilling fashion.
80
Beats Per Minute
It’s music to laugh about our former selves at, just as much as it’s perfect to get drunk and eat ice cream to – and in that, it could define a whole new generation. But for now, it will totally define this summer.
80
NME
On this third album, Sophie Allison combines intensely confessional lyrics with her pop-minded melodies to break free from the tags ascribed to her.
80
AllMusic
By marrying this thick haze -- somewhere between shoegaze and analog drone -- to introspective, melodic songwriting, Soccer Mommy winds up with an album that feels simultaneously familiar and fresh, a record that delivers deliberate surprises while also acting as a soothing balm.
80
musicOMH
Sophie Allison moves away from her folky roots to create something rawer, fuzzier and more experimental.
75
Spectrum Culture
The sound of heartbreak and isolation with earworm hooks.
70
Loud and Quiet

Although it’s easy to reel off the comparisons and potential references on Sometimes, Forever, Soccer Mommy has undoubtedly found a voice which is very much her own, and is only getting more accomplished with it.

70
The Needle Drop
Sophie Allison and Daniel Lopatin make an even better pairing than one would assume.
70
PopMatters

When aesthetic balances are in place for much of Sometimes, Forever, Soccer Mommy glows like a moon reflecting a dying sun, one of the substantial artists of her generation.

60
Slant Magazine

Though Sometimes, Forever is more sonically diverse and lyrically cohesive than Soccer Mommy’s previous albums, its lyrical themes and melodies aren’t nearly as indelible.

60
Record Collector
Sophie Allison’s confessional indie-rock accommodates a textured makeover on her far-reaching third album, with her lyrical and melodic acuity as lights guiding her way.

Favourite: With U
Worst: Fire In The Driveway

1. Bones - 9
[Yeah wow, such a nice dreamy vibe to this. Beautifal production work can't stop thinking about wanting to run in daisies though]

2. With U - 10
[Once again another dreamy kind of track. Love the complexity of the instrumental as well with the mix of Rock, Pop and electronic sounds. The vocals as well just pouring almost sound like a child's as well which I feel suits these lyrics. Probably overthinking it though]

3. Unholy ... read more

Really liked Soccer Mommy's last album 2 years ago, so I was excited to jump into this album. And gotta say, this was so fucking good! Really loved the vocals on here, as it has some of her best vocals across the whole album. I also really liked the production on here, as it has some absolutely stunning moments like "Bones" and "Shotgun" that are spell binding!!! I mean, sure, it's not all that experimental or different compared to many other albums like this, BUT this was ... read more

NO NUANCE REVIEW

While I’ve enjoyed all of the albums I’ve heard from Soccer Mommy, this is definitely the one that made the strongest impression on me. While I don’t think I love it as much as everyone else seems to, I think she’s really starting to blossom as an artist and is heading towards something special.
