I love when an artist takes such a big turn in their carrier and it works. Talk Talk with Spirits Of Eden, Radiohead with Kid A, Sufjan with Age Of Adz, Bon Iver with 22, A Milion. Now it’s time for Perfume Genius and i’m here for it!

Friendly reminder: it's pride month and rating it below 80 is homophobic.

Well he def keeps getting better. This is like some S-Teir music. The level of artistry and musician is just off the charts like fr. Im kinda blown away. I loved his last album but this takes all the best elements about that album to the next level. The production and arrangements take a modern classical tone but with his glossy finish that blesses all of his work. It is borderline psychedelic and sees Mike tackle different influences from everywhere you can think of in a cohesive and ... read more

Screw Drake's album, this is more deserving of a long review.

Ugly Season is needless to say Mike Hadreas' weirdest and most avant-garde record yet by a mile. Since he did not release any singles to promote this record, I did not know what to expect, and I was certainly not expecting this from Mike himself. The production here is pretty dark and uncanny, but also beautiful at the same time. Mike also utilizes falsetto on this record, which is something he rarely does, and sort of reminds me of ... read more

Entretanto, há momentos ... read more

This entire album is a slow-burning, tension-building, meticulous amalgamation of sounds that have a magical aura surrounding them. Somehow, the feeling presented is one of unease and urgency while still being serene, composed and peaceful. This makes for a very ambiguous sentiment that is simultaneously puzzling and familiar for the listener. Some kind of mystical power that unapologetically radiates from this album.

The long runtimes never feel undeserved. Every song is just as long as it ... read more

My gosh this man KNOWS how to make music like no other, goddamn. 'Ugly Season' it's surprisingly more instrumental than ever, compositions all mixed up together flawlessly. Definitely will age like fine wine as I expect it to be, sometimes to make a great record all you got to do is just pour you entire heart out, letting it flow, Perfume Genius did that.

I know I'm handing out 100's like candy on Halloween, but what are you gonna do when people make art like this? you give them their 100 and be thankful.

Extremely avant-garde, eccentric, boundless and distinct

Some albums truly transcend music as a whole. “Ugly Season” is one of those records

It really creates a dimension of its own making you feel like you’re glitching in and out of reality, existence even like the cover would suggest, through the mix of modern classical, a fascinating take on dance and a miriad of other genres I can’t even pinpoint

It feels timeless. It’s a project that will be talked about ... read more

His most challenging and lengthiest work to date, on Ugly Season, Perfume Genius’ 6th studio release, we find Hadreas succeedingly further himself even more from the conventional norms of indie. He provides a drastic stylistic shift creating an artful, confound, and refined avant-pop sound, accompanied by a new short film directed by visionary Jacolby Shatterwhite.

Ugly Season opens with “Just A Room,” a dream-like, 3 minute piece strewn with neo-classical instrumentation. ... read more

'Ugly Season' is only the second Perfume Genius album I've ever heard, the first album I heard of his being the last album he released 'Set My Heart on Fire Immediately' which was a decent Art Pop record even it was a little drab, in contrast though I came away really impressed with what he had to offer on 'Ugly Season' and it made for a really interesting, unique and engaging listen for me. PG's sonic approach on this new album is completely far removed from the sounds of what was on his ... read more

From someone who's not too big on Perfume Genius, this album is fantastic. I went into it not knowing what to expect and left completely blown away by how enchanting and captivating it all sounds. Don't let the title trick you, Ugly Season is an absolutely stunning project that blends multiple influences to invoke feelings and create unique atmospheres, going from classical arrangements to avant-garde dance and art pop. Each song has its own world but they all come together in a very cohesive ... read more

YO WHAT ??
The most beautiful and serene album I've heard this year so far, and definitely one of the most well produced. This is just a whole new level for him.

Amazing album!

This man does not stand still, but tries to turn the music upside down. This is exactly how the album sounds like cover art, meaning it's frayed, it's not easy, and it's like a work of art. This is a higher level of artistic creation than previous albums and it should be given more attention.

Wow. Okay. He deserves the genius in his name cause holy FUCK. Perfume Genius’s album “Ugly Season” was my first introduction to him, and I was honestly hyped about this album because he seems to be well liked amongst the music community. Never in my life though would I expect this was the sound I was walking into and DAMN. When experiencing this album, the first few songs stood out to me for having a very clear Bjork influence, with the long drawn out syllables and long ... read more

🏆 Awarded with Bloom Bop, my badge of musical elegance!

Breathtakingly uncanny, Mike Hadreas’ unique sixth album is a bold, widescreen musical theater that, unlike its predecessor, exquisitely unravels the mystical marvels of experimentalism—another magnificent proof that he thrives in wherever his ambition leads him. It is a survey of what music could be in the future.

On Mike Hadreas’ new album, he invites you to savor the thrilling soundscapes of experimentalism. The ... read more

Interesting to see that this is one of Perfume Genius’s lowest rated album critically (although not low by any means) even though this is arguably his best work today. Such a gorgeous album, the orchestration is incredible, you can tell a lot of time and passion was put into this project.

'Ugly Season' is experimental music that radiates modern, classical, artpop and queer. Its details are crafted carefully and even when not perfect, they are impressive. The work of an artist who's willing to push boundaries in order to stay true.
