While retaining his sense of menace throughout Traditional Synthesizer Music, his umpteenth album as Venetian Snares, he also sounds positively refreshed and reinvigorated.

AllMusic
The album is a sharp, thrilling experience, and easily one of Funk's most focused works.

Unlike past efforts, this album is able to traverse from one end of the spectrum to the other without over-stepping the bounds of tolerability, be it of either tranquillity or squeamishness.

Pitchfork

Traditional Synthesizer Music feels not so much traditional as a refresh: a suite of music that is crafted and ferociously complex, but at its root a pure and primal thing, high on its own chaos.

Traditional in essence it may well be, but it's done with arched eyebrows and a knowing smirk.

Resident Advisor

Traditional Synthesizer Music feels honest and straightforward, operating like a window into Funk's world—one that revolves around music, machines and little else.

Tiny Mix Tapes

The space-drive time-warp gravitational-wave dual-wielding starboard-side of this gigantic surface: words, blips as drums, word as bumps as in therefore, yes, he, Venetian Snares, has made sound from these inputs and outputs.

The scuttery, haphazard and constantly shifting breakcore music of Aaron Funk sees a satisfying re-imagination in the form of eerie but lively traditional synth music - so certainly not breaking its title's promise. The sound may be skeletal, sparse and similar but that issue - if it barely is one - isn't a pressing one at all since over the course of the album we get to understand the appeal of Funk's compositions really well, even if they weaken a noticeable bit during the second half.

certainly a change of pace, but it works. gives me an aphex twin vibe, especially with those classic acid-y synths and quick rhythms

After a long streak of breakbeat related works, the canadian producer and workaholic Aaron Funk (a.K.a. Venetian Snares) ventures off to a slightly less chaotic and menacing direction with Traditional Synthesizer Music, an album that makes amend with its title. Here, Funk delivers a series of much less flashy tracks that rely deeply on his analogic skills and synthesizer minimalism (much different from what we might know him for). This album offers a throwback look into late 90s/early 00s ... read more
