Pacier than her self-titled 2018 debut, the new album is still too long. But lengthiness suits R&B’s slow-burn tendencies: lingering over syllables and songs, letting new albums simmer. It’s a welcome contrast to the hyper-fast capsule pop format dominating the charts.
The happy 90s nostalgia of the British singer-songwriter’s debut yields to the tricksy rhythms and odd magic of her follow-up.
Just in time for the summer season, Ella Mai’s Heart On My Sleeve delivers excellent R&B anthems for those recovering from heartbreak and the hopeless romantics alike.
Admittedly the aural range she executes on the project isn’t massive but it does prove to make a cohesive second album and what she does present shows an incredibly polished sound that doesn’t disappoint after such a monumental first album.
Even though some out of character skips are added to Ella Mai’s discography, the album pulls off a rare feat by squeezing opposite ends of the emotional spectrum into one project with equal intensity.

Ella Mai must have capture lightning in a bottle with “Boo’d Up” because nothing else she’s released has come close to be as incredible as that song. I feel like I’m still waiting for Ella to finally arrive, and it’s been four years since her debut. These are perfectly fine songs, but almost all of them I would consider filler on anyone else’s album.
While “Heart On My Sleeve” isn’t anything unique or groundbreaking, it’s still just a really well executed R&B album with some great vocal performances and highlights.
I’ve always seen talent and potential in Ella Mai, but her music never really impressed me and was pretty generic. However, I really enjoyed the singles for this album, as I either really liked or loved all three of them. Because of that, I decided I would check out this album when it came out. ... read more
