CRITIC REVIEWS

100
The Independent
The singer’s sixth album is a thoroughly blissed-out affair, rocking gently in the warm breezes of vintage country.
100
The Telegraph

Whatever Big Time’s genre, it is a mature and accomplished album; a requiem yet also a quiet celebration. It’s probably the most honest album you’ll hear all year.

100
The Skinny
The album as a whole is a strong argument for Olsen being her generation’s finest songwriter; perhaps now, the rest of the world will recognise that, too.
91
A.V. Club
The longtime folk star finds new power with a move toward country for her sixth studio album.
90
musicOMH
A record that’s testament to going through hell and coming out the other side, and one that confirms its author as one of the foremost singer-songwriters of her generation.
90
The Line of Best Fit
Emotions of love and grief are wrapped up together, as they must have been in Olsen’s year.
90
DIY
Haunting, heartbreaking and life-affirming.
90
Gigwise
It’s unclear who Olsen is addressing but it feels like she’s convincing herself just as much as them. Either way it doesn’t matter, she’s finally free. And when recites her final lines, she sounds more and more assured each time.

Paste

The singer's highly anticipated follow-up to All Mirrors delivers devastating, urgent triumphs of self-acceptance.

83
Beats Per Minute

While her last proper album, 2019’s orchestrally-imbued All Mirrors, was something of a coming out party for her grand artistic abilities and scope, Big Time is the coming out party for her true personality.

81
Pitchfork
Angel Olsen taps deeper into her country influences on a warm, self-assured album whose fluid narration unites love and grief, past and present.
80
Record Collector

US singer-songwriter's sixth studio album raises the bar.

80
Spill Magazine

This is a country album at heart ... with that trademark Olsen flourish. And it works.

80
The Irish Times
It might have taken “something terrible” to make a record like this, but it may well turn out to be Olsen’s magnum opus.
80
The Observer
A tumultuous couple of years are elegantly worked out on the singer-songwriter’s sixth studio album.
80
Northern Transmissions

Big Time is a record about the highs and lows we all go through, perfect ally contextualized through her own perspective to come out inherently relatable and deliciously enjoyable in every way.

80
Rolling Stone UK
Via lush instrumentation and her most accomplished songwriting yet, her sixth album feels like a sombre but defiant breakthrough.
80
Mojo
Grief and light combine to potent effect on singer-songwriter's sixth album.
80
Uncut

Her sixth ... executes no radical stylistic swerve but neither are its 10 songs of a single type.

80
Clash
'Big Time' is a focused record that contains stunning examples of vulnerability, almost too exposed to watch. Her ability to shed layers artistically and emotionally, over and over, leaves you excited to see where her next destination may be.
80
Loud and Quiet

Sonically, as well as emotionally, Big Time feels almost like coming full circle, the unmistakable, burning infatuation of Olsen’s lyrics and delivery redirected by the joy of fulfilled love.

80
Rolling Stone
Six albums in, the indie rock darling makes a joyful, triumphant breakthrough.
80
American Songwriter
It’s an album best explored with headphones, perhaps alone and in the dark, to appreciate Wilson’s intricate instrumentation and Olsen’s intoxicating, fluid, musical dynamics. Reading the lyrics also helps absorb and intensify these bittersweet songs of hurt, desire, and occasionally, the promise of sunnier times ahead.
80
NME
Angel Olsen's sixth album turns a period of intense emotion into an assured, Americana-flecked triumph.
80
AllMusic

Rather than offering something for everyone, Big Time wrangles complex, overwhelming emotions with a broad palette that's commanded by its lyrics and tormented vocal performances.

80
PopMatters

With Big Time, Angel Olsen draws inspiration from some of popular music’s most perennial templates, revamping them and reinventing herself.

75
Under the Radar
The new record finds Olsen basking in new love and lost love, using her distinctive tone and quavering vibrato to great effect.
74
Sputnikmusic
All that can be said in the end is that this is a quality album, so give it a spin and let the discussion and debate begin.
70
The Needle Drop
Angel leaning more into a country sound goes over well, unsurprisingly.
70
No Ripcord

As far as transitional phases go, Olsen immerses herself into an intricately crafted and honest piece that doesn't resonate as distinctly her own.

NO NUANCE REVIEW

So this is that Angel Olsen character all you music nerds have been obsessing over…

You were right. Congratulations on being right!

Even though Big Time sounds like her past records, particularly the folksy sounds of Burn Your Fire For No Witness, it can also be seen as a sonic evolution. Big Time eschews the grander instrumental palette of All Mirrors for a more down-to-earth sound that makes you remember that she hails from a Midwest state. Big Time is a country record that is quiet, carried by her twangy performance and her incandescent songwriting.

What has colorized Olsen's writing in the past has always been the ... read more

Phenomenal. My AOTY for 2022. Re-listened recently and it still holds up. Fav. tracks: Big Time, Right Now, and This Is How It Works.
