Because of their scattershot nature, Thug's mixtapes aren't definitive artistic statements. Instead, you get momentary snapshots of a rapper on the rise and a window into his bizarre lifestyle. As such, 'I'm Up' represents Thug's most accessible and immediate work to date.

PopMatters

It makes for a fun listen, and it sounds like he’s having fun as well considering seven out of the nine songs are collaborations.

I’m Up doesn’t muster up the highs of the Slime Season series ... but Thug manages to compile many of his best attributes into a tightly-wound 38 minutes: his knack for zingers, his impish demeanor, and his ability to slink through productions of all shapes and sizes.

Spin

It’s brief and feels disconnected at the beginning and end, and for the most part doesn’t exercise his considerable chorus-crafting muscles. But it’s a fascinating creative time capsule, and feels like a welcome detour during a hugely prolific four-year period.

HipHopDX

Although it is still to be determined if Thugger can step it up a couple of notches for an album that will be touted as an official release, I’m Up doesn’t offer up any reason to doubt him.

Tiny Mix Tapes

Where I’m Up might not be the monumental, crossover release many had been anticipating all this time, it’s nevertheless a satisfying addition to the rapper’s insatiable canon of off-kilter rap music.

AllMusic

The rest of the best comes from the empowering music that reflects the mixtape's title, with "Special" being a prime example of motivational music in the druggy time of Future.

Consequence of Sound

The chief complaint with I’m Up is its narrowness. At just nine tracks and 38 minutes (a lot of which is handed over to guests), there’s just not enough of Thug rapping for this to match up to last year’s releases. But as a thirst-quencher, it keeps Jeffrey in his recent groove.

Exclaim!

Unlike Future, whose new top-notch project EVOL doubled down on his melancholic strengths, Thugga has offered up a half-baked album that largely neglects his improvisational dexterity.

Staying in the conversation by releasing a steady stream of new material can be good, but it works best when there’s more cohesion and less filler.

The Needle Drop

Atlanta rapper and crooner Young Thug drops another indiscernible collection of tracks.

I don't think there's a single Thug tape that's not in good spirits. I'm always going to repeat this it seems, but this is a fun little mixtape. It, like all of his tapes, are fun in terms of trap injected tapes of today. He's no Lil Yachty, he's not THAT fun, but Thug has a consistency about him that'll gravitate even the less than average hip hop listener to try out some of his newest material. This, what was originally Slime Season 3, was definitely the weakest of the mixtapes Thug released ... read more

its young thug's worst release, by far, but there are still a few tracks that are worth checking out. the mixtape as a whole is a disjointed mess that would be better with less screeching and more cohesive rapping. young thug's voice varies too much on this project, changing paces and tones too often, but he still has his regular character intact. in addition to the below average music, the title is awful, along with the tape's cover. good thing that thug got his shit back together.
