CRITIC REVIEWS

100
Mojo

It's difficult to detach this record from the harrowing specificity of its backstory, yet Riderless Horse never makes you feel like an intruder.

100
The Telegraph

Riderless Horse is far from an easy listen for obvious reasons. But hearing the 56-year-old Nastasia describe and attempt to understand these stark events is never less than compelling.

100
The Observer
The cult American singer-songwriter endured 25 years of abuse at the hands of her partner, an experience wrenchingly recorded in her first album in 12 years.
90
The Line of Best Fit
Nastasia has turned her harrowing experiences into genuinely beautiful songs.
85
Beats Per Minute

Riderless Horse is a quiet exorcism, in communion with ghosts, deceptively dressed up in as little and as simple clothing as possible.

80
Uncut

Born out of the end of a mutually abusive relationship and grief/guilt following her partner's suicide, this set of lean, characteristically nuanced, folk-edged songs also signals the start of her recovery, including a renewed love of music making.

80
The Skinny
Nina Nastasia returns with another strong addition to her superlative catalogue.
80
The Independent

Riderless Horse obviously isn’t an easy listen. At times – as on “Go Away – it gets dirgy. But its truth-hounding also delivers poetry and restful release.

80
AllMusic

One might expect something different from Nina Nastasia after twelve years in retirement, and Riderless Horse does indeed present her in a new way, though the remarkable talent that was on display in her previous work is still here, and as powerful and moving as ever.

78
Pitchfork
After a 12-year absence, the singer-songwriter returns with a raw, unadorned celebration of survival.

"Terrible things happen. These were some terrible things. So, what to do – learn something valuable, connect with people, move the fuck out of that apartment, remember the humor, find the humor, tell the truth, and make a record. I made a record." ~ Nina Nastasia

"The truth will set you free. But not until it is finished with you." ~ David Foster Wallace

I never wanna listen to this beautiful album again. Put me in a very ugly headspace. It’s astonishing. If you don’t know the story behind the album, the album will tell it quite vividly. If you do know the story, it’s nearly unbearable. Good for her, but holy ouch.
