For as talented of a musician as Miller is, her greatest feat on her first proper LP is creating a distinct feeling and sense of place that's possible only because every element here works in sync.

She should be closely watched in the future, for Gumption indicates the blossoming of a musical talent capable of making a lot from the basic materials of human existence: our own emotions and everyday thought processes.
Gumption is a pop album and an experimental work, with all of the deep charms of both.
As an album, Gumption meanders quite a bit, occasionally to the point of feeling detached, but its glimmers of gold make for an ultimately compelling listen.
At only eight songs, it’s a shame that Gumption seems to only truly find its footing as it draws to a close in its last couple of songs. That said, as a debut, it has a few moments of captivating beauty and shows plenty of promise for more.
