The Monkees' first album in nearly 20 years is also their best since the Sixties – to be precise, since the Head soundtrack in 1968.
Good Times! sounds as buffed and polished as a digital recording often does, and the Monkees sound their age (all three are in their early 70s), but otherwise the mood of the album sits nicely alongside the band’s vintage classics like Headquarters and The Birds, The Bees & The Monkees.
Even with the slight stench of commercialism tainting this release, and some sub-par material Good Times! exudes enough, well, good times to capture what made the Monkees so much better than their teeny-bopper peers and maintained a dedicated fan base for five decades.
