With 2000 Joey Bada$$ proves he’s just as sharp as he was when he first stepped into the rap game. He offers smart social commentary on American gun violence.

Exclaim!

On 2000, Joey raps with the wisdom of New York legends like Nas, Big Pun and Ghostface Killah. The album is emotionally mature beyond his years, and like 1999, it is a gateway to hip-hop sounds of the past while looking to the future, making for a project that shouldn't be skipped this year.

‘2000’ is a distinctly Joey Bada$$ project, although it doesn’t necessarily tread entirely new conceptual grounds, the spaces it does occupy are well thought out and exceptional for a reason. This album is another brilliant example of why Joey Bada$$ is such a powerhouse in hip-hop.

HipHopDX
Joey’s not breaking any new ground here, but he doesn’t really have to. He’s not angling to be a momentary King of New York, he’s more interested in building a legacy and — perhaps more than anything – enjoying rap.

His latest finds him tempering his boom-bap revivalism with surprisingly mainstream elements in this sequel to 2012’s 1999.

70
AllMusic

2000 is a showcase of musically rich throwback production, with jazz-flecked instrumentals and smooth boom-bap beats backdropping Joey's controlled bars and lyrics of New York City life.

70
The Needle Drop

Joey’s second nature for rapping and lyricism makes up for most of 2000’s shortcomings.

68
Pitchfork
The Brooklyn rapper’s first new studio album in five years puts a plush Bad Boy veneer over corner-bred rhyme schemes. Wide-ranging production makes it easy to ignore the rough spots.
60
Rolling Stone

At times, 2000 strains under its ambition. It’s unclear whether Bada$$ wants to build an Important Album or simply release something commensurate with his growing celebrity.

Big on sound but small on substance. I guess Joey is just proceeding on the path he already traveled with his last record “ALL-AMERIKKKAN BADA$$”. It’s heavily accessible, i’d even consider it pop rap. This one though mixes some boom bap influence into it, and also adds more of Joey’s personal side. He has some introspective moments, even opens up about things that have been troubling him. Look, the production is for the most part good, it gets you groovin’ ... read more

Joey Bada$$ is out for blood

10 years later, with the raw energy of a Griselda record mixed with the smoothness and jazziness of A Tribe Called Quest he delivers the follow up record to his iconic "1999" mixtape and you couldn't wish for much more

Not only does "2000" live up to its predecessor but it surpasses it. A fantastic homage to 90s-00s East Coast Hip Hop

Kicking things off "The Baddest" is a statement. A true east coast throwback with ethereal ... read more
