With this fifth release, Imperial Triumphant have perfected the infusion of their claustrophobic nature, marrying the most aggressive parts with the outlandish theatrical jazz that remains their foundation with surgical precision.
What IMPERIAL TRIUMPHANT have done here is push their creative envelope to new sonic worlds, which is incredibly exciting.
Spirit of Ecstasy not only proves them to be deserving of all this praise, it also establishes a new gold standard for the group and the black metal genre itself: it’s a cataclysmic work, filled with dark alleyways and shining stage lights, as abrasive as it is listenable.
For all its goadingly obtuse turns and decisions, Spirit Of Ecstasy somehow coheres into a wonderful, ornate and aberrant whole.
It's musically similar to their 2020 breakthrough Alphaville, but with a much more defined sound that gives each instrument room to breathe.
If you love them, Spirit of Ecstasy, while not flawless, is still worthy of your time and money. That’s the power of metal, folks.
Spirit Of Ecstasy certainly isn’t an easy listen. There are moments where it seems like they’re trying a little too hard to be different for confrontation’s own sake, but the album succeeds in its own lack of boundaries and utter refusal to compromise.

Imperial Triumphant remains one of the most intriguing acts in metal, but the production is a little more questionable this time around.
