If you miss the Aphex Twin who wrote songs that lit up warehouse raves at 3 a.m. but still tied your brain into knots, do yourself a favor and check out Rival Consoles.
It's certainly not that anything Rival Consoles is doing is particularly innovative, or that there's anything here worth recommending to anyone other than the biggest fans of electronic music; it's something new, but not something extraordinary. Still, those who do embark on a listening experience with Rival Consoles will find something to dance to in the foreground, and something to really listen to in the background.
To say that Rival Consoles' debut album is defiantly retro is to miss the point -- there is no other function for the album but to be retro to begin with, an intentional reclaiming of a time and place while still finding a way to make it something that could only be released in 2009.
