The 405

Greys' love for the political-minded punk of Washington, D.C.--Fugazi, Bad Brains, etc.--is obvious. With Outer Heavens, they might have just joined them on even terms.

Exclaim!

Outer Heaven is consistently enjoyable, but never too comfortable.

NOW Magazine

While the 90s influences are clear, Outer Heaven sounds steady in its own era, splicing up old sounds and altering their DNA for the present.

80
AllMusic
As far as sophomore efforts go, Greys have stepped up their game considerably.

No Ripcord

If Anything was good, but this is the work of a band who are well on their way to establishing themselves as key cogs in their category.

78
Pitchfork

Even if Greys are still learning how to stretch out with purpose, Outer Heaven serves as a most welcome reminder of indie rock's iconoclastic potential, from a band committed to the belief that it could be your life.

75
Consequence of Sound

Outer Heaven finds Greys indulging in their experimental inclinations to add color to a framework not especially prone to deviation. By challenging their listeners and pushing themselves, they manage to sound fresh by refusing to settle.

A post-hardcore revival that desperately needs the stronger, heavier riffs to survive. The band has an interesting sound in development, but overall, its their political themes that surface throughout the album's runtime, even though they're not always accompanied by inspired instrumentals. A few tracks in the first half may please some Sonic Youth and Fugazi hardcore fans, even if for just a moment.
