Ultimately, what makes Good News so successful is that it retains the melancholy mood of past works, while at the same time adding depth and maturity.
Even though this album isn't as immediately or showily brilliant as The Moon & Antarctica, Good News for People Who Love Bad News reveals itself as just as strong a statement.
While certainly not as much of a sell-out record as it could have been, Good News will come as something of a disappointment to those of us who love Moon.
Tom Waits-ian reinvention.
If Good News... isn't the pillar-like masterpiece Modest Mouse fans have waited years for, it's proof that things haven't completely fallen apart.
For all its transcendent moments, Good News ultimately fails to hold together all that well as an album.
Though the album falls away slightly after the first half dozen tracks, but there are still further peaks with 'Bukowski' and 'Blame It On The Tetons'.
There are some pleasantly elaborate, wayward songs here ... Forays into funk and Tom Waits' scrapyard are cringe-inducing, though.

2004 albums (4/10)
if the whole album was like the start it would be a contender for top 5 albums of all time.
bests song: The World At Large
worst: the devil's workday
quite a few songs here sound like i’m listening to some evil villains who were allowed to make music and it’s actually pretty fun. in between this very random and insane album are 2 of some of the prettiest songs i’ve heard in a while with The World At Large and The Good Times Are Killing Me. went into this thing with no expectations having only ever heard Float On before and left it pretty intrigued to looked more into modest mouse
The first three tracks on this album are legendary, after that they are also pretty good, especially the ending track. My one complaint might have to be some of the interludes not really doing anything for me.
