CRITIC REVIEWS

100
NME
The cult star's latest is delightfully idiosyncratic, and further confirms his place as one of his generation's most consistently brilliant songwriters.
100
The Skinny

God Save the Animals is Alex G's most sonically consistent record, managing to turn the darkness into light on the turn of a devastating key change.

90
Spectrum Culture
Alex G’s ninth album in the past dozen years gives its listeners bliss, a respite from an anxious world.
90
The Line of Best Fit

Though it feels glued together by the seams, God Save The Animals, like the best Alex G efforts, eventually reveals an almost impossible cohesiveness – a slightly off-kilter haze where a smouldering heart shines for others to lean into.

90
Exclaim!
Alex G is a genius at crafting intimately familiar feelings while injecting off-kilter miscues that satisfy the oddball compulsions living in our heads.
90
Slant Magazine
The album finds the already ponderous Alex Giannascoli in a particularly inquisitive mood.
87
Paste
The enigmatic Philadelphia musician takes inspiration from melodic radio rock on his surprising, gorgeous new album.
85
Beats Per Minute

God Save the Animals’ production approaches are understated compared to those employed in previous work yet still precisely rendered. What stand out – prominently and unabashedly – are Alex’s impeccably crafted and irresistibly delivered songs.

85
Under the Radar
Biographical or not, if there is anything to garner, it is some new, spiritual Alex G Truisms that read like so: breathe, relax, unclench your jaw, and enjoy the ride.
84
Pitchfork
Placing its faith in the healing power of animals and Auto-Tune, Alex Giannascoli’s most hopeful record stands out for its grounded patience and moments of sharp lyrical simplicity.
80
AllMusic

Alex G's most disjointed, eerie, and dynamic outing yet -- descriptions that could also be applied collectively to the core songs.

80
Dork
‘God Save The Animals’ brings a stunning display of vulnerability which will have you hooked from the offset.
80
The Observer
The American musician continues to mine a rich seam of autobiography and fiction.
80
Uncut
The album maintains its hallucinatory aura throughout; it’s a dazzling aural anime from a wildly original artist.
80
Clash
‘God Bless the Animals’ has Alex G on home turf with his sleepy but sweet acoustic guitar-driven tracks, as well as a good helping of lo-fi textures, catchy piano licks and some of his strongest vocal performances to date.
80
DIY

It’s a testament to his talents that he can produce an album that encapsulates his weird and beautiful world, which is full of more questions than answers.

80
No Ripcord

It’s undeniable, and no less satisfying, to say that God Save The Animals, Alex G’s ninth full-length album, is easily one of his most cohesive works to date.

70
Northern Transmissions

It’s not often we get treated to an album that is so interesting in its voice and textures, that allows you to explore its messages and meanings all the while just plain enjoying it.

70
Loud and Quiet

God Save the Animals is a typically idiosyncratic set from an artist ploughing his own furrow, but it doesn’t entirely fulfil his considerable promise.

70
Gigwise

God Save The Animals feels like Alex G's most complete work yet, fearlessly experimenting with tonal shifts and leading on powerfully spiritual lyrics, leaving listeners unsure of whether they, too, should be soul-searching after a full listen or two.

60
Mojo
The inventiveness on display is undeniably impressive, but the process sometimes hides a little too much of the artist behind it.

Alex G truly never misses. This is yet another great blend of indie rock and folk music with some neo-psych influences. The fluidity between these tracks is remarkable, which is always something I look for in an album; cohesion. Alex G is a master at this, if you go back through the discography you'll find that each record has a seamless feel all throughout. With how consistent the songwriting is on God Save the Animals, this may be one of Alex G's best projects to date.

I would love for the animals to be saved fr. Super sick album art

Genuinely with the first 2/3s of this thing I was ready to call this my favorite Alex G album. Even though some other parts don’t hit as hard on the nail, this is a superrrr enjoyable listen. There is so much charm. SOO much. Like wtf my heart feels so warm after listening to this. I enjoyed House of Sugar, but it didn't really stand out to me when compared to other Alex G releases.. I loveeee the direction he went in with ... read more

another prominent artist that i have completely overlooked

almost all of my album reviews at this point open up with "i've never listened to ___" which is unfortunate, but it happens. and it's happening right now. i know nothing about alex g, i've heard nice things about him and i know his music leans on the indie side but other than that this was a blind listen. and the album was fine

going to get my complaints out of the way first, so without further ado:

i don't like his voice ... read more

Album #94 from Album Safari 2022.
I remember the first time I listened to it, my eyes sort of rolled into the back of my head and my memory was completely erased of what I had just listened to. So, of course I would give it a re-listen!
And then the exact same thing happened. I… I don’t know. I really don’t know what it is that doesn’t do it for me. It’s… fine, completely serviceable and competent, but it really does absolutely nothing for me. Oh, well.
