Great sound (vocally and production wise) but this one wasn't the massive success their previous albums' singles yielded, and thus doesn't get the same classic-status designation of its 3 predecessors and others by the Blackmon-fronted project. Larry's vocals as I already stated are at a career-high here though, his signature voice and delivery shining through the lesser songwriting; and, combined with the funky electro production, make this a fun entry.
The follow up to Word Up could be an insurmountable task as it is the biggest success of Cameo to date. Finally cracking top 10 on the pop charts and giving Larry Blackmon a pop culture face via the hit and red crotch cup.
Entering with the same rhythm pattern and horn section of the aforementioned hit provides familiarity, but at a cost. As does the signature “Cameo bass line” revisited on the second single, “Skin I’m In.” But, unlike the former, the latter ... read more
