This is probably the cutest jazz-funk album I’ve heard.
For those that don’t know, DOMi and JD Beck have been well known in the jazz community for their youtube videos showcasing very fast and technical playing. This is, in fact, tight as fuck. A lot of hard hitting progressive jazz, hip-hop here. The features are incredible (especially the song with Herbie Hancock), the production is crisp and easy on the ears, and while it calms down in certain areas, it comes right back, all up in your face with flying melodies and intricate drum patterns. Highlights : TAKE A CHANCE, SNiFF, WHATUP or WHOA
Dope ass album. They are so talented and its cool to see the big names on there. Appreciated the Herbie Hancock feature. All so cool. Definitely a jazz fusion vibe. Very musically smart/artsy so not a super frequent listen for me just cause its something to ponder. Fantastic debut. Can't wait to see more from them.
I don't know what has been going on but this album has been hunting me down like the plague. First it was a recommendation, then it was on my Spotify page, then it showed up in Amoeba Los Angeles today as I was looking for some juicy records to pick out. My favorite album EVER. I’m not giving it an 100 because I don’t think it’s perfect, but it’s really, really got something. DOMi and JD Becks chemistry is top notch, the instrumentation is wild, props to Anderson .Paak to finding these two. Every instrumentation here, to me, its freaking amazing. this album is good but srsly why do all the studio versions pale in comparison to live performances? like, why do the drums sound so stiff on You Don't Have To Rob Me?
