NME

Sound City: Real To Reel Soundtrack captures a composite of the Sound City aesthetic, merging gnarly post-grunge rock with a ’70s country haze.

A.V. Club

The high points, though, accentuate the low, not to mention the fact that any album with a time-restrictive concept like Sound City is bound to be a mixed bag.

Pitchfork

With its hit-and-miss deviations in tone and quality, Real to Reel feels less like a tribute to a studio that created some of the greatest albums of all time, and more like an approximation of a typical Active Rock Radio playlist.

Consequence of Sound

Sound City: Real to Reel has its highlights, but the bad songs are hard to justify. Some collaborators don’t mesh with others, and all of them suffer from embarrassing lyrics.

The album is a pretty mixed bag of a record, with moments feeling slogish, disjointed, boring and underdeveloped, and other moments feeling grand, fun, free, fanatic, interesting and entertaining as hell. For a soundtrack to a film, it's not the worst you could go for. For a Dave Grohl project however, it does feel a bit wishy washy.

Favorite Jams: Mantra, From Can and Cannot, Centipede

Lest Favorite: Your Wife Is Calling
