CRITIC REVIEWS

AllMusic

Some stretches of the album may be a little too sleepy and subdued, with songs bleeding together in a hypnotic haze. Nonetheless, refreshingly void of aggression or any deliberate tension, Cloud Nine comforts with its positivity and charm.

NME
Kygo’s relatively restrained sound becomes repetitive over a 55-minute running time. Too many tracks build slowly towards a reasonably uplifting instrumental break without quite becoming full-on bangers.

Rolling Stone

His debut album, Cloud Nine, is naturally very same-y – deep house wasting away in Margaritaville – but unfailingly gorgeous.

The Line of Best Fit

Cloud Nine is far from a perfect album, but in an era when so many superstar DJs and producers can seem divorced from the actual songwriting aspect of music Kygo does deserve praise. He’s still figuring out the transition out of his remix artist phase, but enough works on his debut to show that there’s hope for the future.

The Guardian
Well, this is pop, where cliche can be transcendent, but these joyless songs are chemically castrated of any passion or sexuality.
20
The Arts Desk

Cloud Nine’s awfulness simply comes down to the sheer, lowest common denominator banality of Kygo’s ideal of dance music.

This left me feeling no joy, hatred, confusion, nothing. As the album art should imply, it's like watching paint dry.

An album that has more lowlights than highlights. When it has highlights, however, it is also iconic. It is saved from a lower score by the fact that there is a grouping of good, mostly fresh songs, towards the end of the album, as well as 3 classics sprinkled in. But other than that, the project consists mostly of monotonous, disappointing, boring beats and often annoying vocals. Points are also deducted for an incredible lack of consistency, as well as an extremely limited sound. On an album ... read more
