Crack Magazine

By drawing from so many themes and aesthetics, it’s clear that Natural Brown Prom Queen is a celebration: of creative freedom, of Black and brown women, of Park’s colourful inner world.

Pitchfork
With daring lyricism and technical ingenuity, singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Brittney Parksโ€™ second album conjures a frenzied energy as emotionally soothing as it is physically crushing.
90
AllMusic
As a vocalist, Parks shows even greater versatility, matching modes ranging from breathy siren to tough MC with productions that dish out flickering electronics, atmospheric breaks, blown-out trap, and knocking hip-hop soul. Resilience, joy, and power emanate from all of it.

No Ripcord

Parks comes across as an open book, delivering a lushly atmospheric portrayal of a woman who takes pleasure in living in the moment.

If the sound of Beyoncé’s similarly sonically adventurous Renaissance whetted your appetite for challenging, demanding soul, then Brittany Parks’ latest could be just what you’re looking for.

The Telegraph

The effect is arresting, the rhythms dazzling and the pacing dreamlike as Sudan Archives trills and sautilles her way through her second album, Natural Brown Prom Queen.

Exclaim!
It's an album she's described as being "about discovering your worth, and manifesting a life around that understanding." Based on the end result, that manifesting is starting to pay off.

An unashamedly brash and confident record, but much more subtle and realistic.

Loud and Quiet

It’s a pity, because where lyrics are weak, the solid sound and superbly-crafted beats that distinguish this album and mark a significant step forward from Athena feel like a lost opportunity for Sudan Archives.

Dude, I’m about 5 songs into this thing, and I have to stop to say something

This is incredible R&B. The flow from Sudan Archives is incredible. The bars are all there, and somehow the hooks are catchier than ever.

I hope this continues through the whole album. My jaw has hit the floor a couple of times already. Absolutely loving it.

Edit: finished the album. This is Sudan Archives showing that she really has something to prove.

'Natural Brown Prom Queen' is *black excellence*, fortunately R&B is in good hands and this project is just overwhelming, Brittney Parks came to devour everything. A body of work that's full of life and original ideas, totally built on fantastic beats and melodies and the prettiest vocals I've heard in some time, couldn't be more surprised. It lives within the freedom of artistic creativity and shows she's able to do whatever she wants with her art, a solid & astounding must-hear album, ... read more

Sudan Archive's sophomore album is awaited by yours truly for a long time now, finally it takes shape by the name of 'Natural Brown Prom Queen', and damn, it was worth the wait. Not only this record is incredibly well paced but it's also really innovative in the R&B camp, a lot of different new sounds are being explored in here with naturality; Having a bonus of orchestral instrumentation with a heavy use of violin and other instruments, everything is at the right place. The construction of ... read more
