So, this is the first genuinely great album this year. Sure, the Sematary project is excellent, but there's more ironic enjoyment there, while this is a serious, cohesive and downright beautiful LP. James McGovern's voice is not a voice we usually call great, but it fits perfectly with the production and the atmosphere they are creating here. As I previously mentioned, it's a cohesive project and while it maintains a specific sound throughout the album, it still provides you with great variety. ... read more
The Murder Capital from Dublin plays modern post-punk at the highest level, screams and nervousness are gone, but energy has been added due to stable musical progress, the record is exciting, it's a pleasure to listen to.

At least let me do a couple things with my life before you murder me
This is the first album of the year that I can genuinely say I love. The Murder Capital brings a really interesting blend of post punk and indie rock to make some fucking bangers. I love the attitude in the vocals and the production is solid as hell. A lot of these songs have been stuck in my head since first hearing them too. I love the progression and ending of the title track. A Thousand Lives is super catchy and probably ... read more
British indie rock band try not to sound like Arctic Monkeys and/or Radiohead challenge: IMPOSSIBLE
the band borrows sounds from everywhere but they still manage to sound pretty boring and generic
the delivery gets kinda annoying and the instrumentals get a bit messy sometimes
also idk how to explain it but it sounds pretentious. it's not as good as it tries to make you think it is (if that makes any sense)
look it's not bad if you're absolutely itching for music like this, but these guys ... read more
NO NUANCE REVIEW
Yes, this is obvious of AOTY bait as they come, but I’m a dumb little fish who can’t resist a tasty little worm
The Murder Capital takes the reigns on 2023 with the second studio album 'Gigi's Recovery'. I see the Fontaines D.C. comparison here, but I think this is miles better than Skinty Fia.
The Murder Capital is a five person post-punk band based out of Dublin, Ireland. Their debut record 'When I Have Fears' was released in 2019 to widespread critical acclaim (and has a really strong critic score of 84).
I think post-punk is usually a genre I have to try a little harder to get into, rather than ... read more
I like the overall sound of the album, I like the variation in songs. Overall I enjoyed listening to this album
Gigi's Recovery is not always the brightest album, but The Murder Capital land their punches quite consistently.
As one wise man once said, post-punk can mean literally anything depending on the album and the artist. Gigi's Recovery certainly is post-punk and a different kind of one: it is a lush, multi-colored, much quieter and even more emotional kind of this genre, and such style is done high justice on this project.
⠀⠀The rock instrumentation is very gentle and welcoming (by punk standards, that is), and it is greatly accompained by a lot of beautiful artsy ideas coming from electronic music. I ... read more
Summary: Some incredible post-punk/art rock that excels in vocal delivery, lyricism, experimentation, and songwriting. The production is a bit odd at times, particularly on the album's first half, but this is still one of the best post-punk albums I've ever heard. Certainly won't be my AOTY, but may well end up in my top-10-of-the-year list. 95/100 - Decent 9. Full review below.
Oh, this is REALLY good. It certainly won't hold its #1 spot for the rest of the year, but it's earned a #1 spot for ... read more
Not many 2023 releases have caught my attention, but this one was recommended to me by a friend and since I like this genre, I was willing to give it a shot. And hey it's pretty damn enjoyable. I don't think The Murder Capital are essentially reinventing Post-Punk or doing anything groundbreaking, but I think the Art/Indie Rock elements such as in the more emotional tracks like The Stars Will Leave Their Stage that are on play on this album really help Gigi's Recovery stand out amongst other ... read more
Great post-punk revival album in 2023? The Murder Capital's sophomore is a consistent listen that showcases strong musicianship.
1st listen: Loving this so far. Sounds like a darker and more dissonant version of Interpol. My only complaint is that the lead singer can come off as a bit pretentious at times. Still, really excited to revisit this!
• the instruments are amazing, and the production is top-notch
• the vocals, admittedly, are a bit weak. they hold a good album back from being a great one
• "Return My Head" is what this whole record should be aiming to accomplish
• interested to see where their sound evolves past this. a lot of potential here
I'll be honest, this is my first real experience with a Post-punk album, but I thought this was fantastic.
I love the atmosphere throughout this record, and as an album experience it was really great. I absolutely adore the instrumentation on pretty much every song here. There's definitely some tracks that showed that James McGovern isn't the best vocalist of all time (especially on the slower ones), but he gets the job done on a majority what's offered here. Definitely give this one a shot.
The Murder Capital is an Irish post-punk band that have been at it since 2019 – and listening to a bit of their earlier stuff, I can certainly get the appeal behind it! It may be somewhat meat-and-potatoes, but it seems very strong and intense off their first record When I Have Fears. Gigi’s Recovery is their 2nd record over, and comparatively, has gotten quite similar praise from critics and fans alike. With that, I think it only makes sense for me to listen to it – it is ... read more
I didn't know what to expect when going into this album, and this band but I ended up being okay with it.
Personally, I didn't like the vocal performances, i think they are very weak and boring, but the instrumentals just cover up for it so good that it makes it listenable and enjoyable.
I have also heard a big resemblance and similarity to Radiohead in this album,
For example, the drums at the beginning of the track "A Thousand Lives" literally sounds like the beginning of "15 ... read more
Im glad to say this is the first album ive genuinely liked this year, While Gigi's Recovery borrows influence from several places they create a beautiful sound and the execution is for the most part very good. The production here is great with some very enjoyable gorgeous moments, The highs of the album are really amazing and shows a lot of potential.
When it comes to the singer i do like his delivery quite a bit, But i think that as a vocalist he can be a little mediocre and underwhelming at ... read more
2023 looking good with this.
so after making that other review, i was like "i can do better" and deleted it. now im here redoing my review so hah.
the band made their name known after a wonderous record "when i have fears" back in 2019. back then they were loud, explosive and rough but full of creativity and had a good grip on their genre. it got critical praise and people were looking for more.
do note that "when i have fears" was back in 2019. now we're here 4 ... read more
