The artist makes a convincing argument here that he too belongs in Houston's pantheon.

Rather than ending the record with an emphatic statement, the band sounds confused and adrift. Which is a shame, because for most of its passing, Robert Ellis is an exercise in confident songwriting, creative arrangements, and strong playing.

This is by any standard a decent album, yet one I found very difficult to connect with. Robert Ellis has a very strong Americana voice and the songwriting here is generally good, but the songs seemed a little bit derivative of recent successful artists in the field, like Jason Isbell. In addition, the album is front-loaded, and the second half has a few songs that drag past their natural limits. Still likely to appeal to a number of Americana fans, however.
