Spill Magazine

Return Of The Dream Canteen is a modern take on the dirty, bare bones funk and quirky melodicism the Red Hot Chili Peppers are known for with another latter career highlight that will thrill for its sheer unpredictability and audacity.

Clash
The band promised that they weren’t going to play it safe with this record, and it seems to have paid off.

The Arts Desk

The twofold keys to its success may be the return to the fold of guitarist John Frusciante after a decade, and COVID lockdown, during which the band holed up and jammed out tune after tune, with no time limit and no specific goals or limitations.

Classic Rock
A fine album by any standards, not least the Chili Peppers' own.

The whole fun of a new RHCP album is hearing the ways they grapple with their legacy and push the boundaries of their sound. In that sense, Dream Canteen offers just the right amount of old and new.

I wouldn’t say Return of the Dream Canteen is better overall than the previous effort. It might have a couple of higher sonic peaks, but suffers from similar flaws. Obviously, one hour-long album with the strongest tracks recorded in the past couple of years would have been enough for a stronger comeback.

Pitchfork
The funk-rock band’s second album of the year is a surprisingly introspective set filled with references to forgotten actors, classic bands, and, most tellingly, decades-old Chili Peppers songs.

AllMusic

Like its sibling Unlimited Love, Return of the Dream Canteen benefits from the positive energy of these four friends just having fun in the studio, and is designed for listeners to plug in and bliss out without any expectations of mainstream-ready fare.

NME
On their second album release of the year the Californians break new ground, but bury these new discoveries with tired old tricks.
60
The Telegraph
Mildly soulful, rarely unpalatable, the Chili Peppers keep delivering American fast-food for the ears, even as they enter their sixties.
40
Evening Standard
It’s a case of quantity over quality as the veteran funksters deliver their second album in six months.

EDIT: I felt bad for not listening the whole way through and just listened to the second half. I actually found it much more interesting and even enjoyable at times mainly due to John Frusciante’s stellar efforts to save this album with his guitar work. For me at least the best stuff here is when RHCP are trying to do something different.

They probably could have made a fantastic single album had they combined the more interesting cuts from this album and Unlimited Love. I’m ... read more

This is certainly one of the RHCP albums of all time.

Absolute disappointment, not a single California line on here

Yes I'm not kidding. I love this so much. To quote a youtube comment on one of this record's songs:
"Unlimited Love is what the public wanted, but Return Of The Dream Canteen is what the fans wanted".

I love every single track. Every. Single. One. Even what people consider "duds" like My Cigarette, which actually MIGHT be my favorite song on this because it's so fun to listen to, but honestly, to me, it doesn't even matter what song is better than the other because EVERY ... read more

This album feels a little underrated. Not that much though. I think there are quite a few good songs here, Tippa My Tongue is a cool opener, and sets the tone pretty well. The Drummer is a cool song later into the album that I really like. Eddie is a great song, and probably the best here, though not my favorite. Most of these songs are pretty good. However, there are a couple forgettable songs here. La x however many is not memorable at all, and My Cigarette could’ve been so much better ... read more

I don't even remember anything about this album. This also wasn't very good. Why did they release 2 mediocre projects this year? I liked Eddie. I also liked 3 other songs when I listened to it apparently. It still wasn't very good. Worse than Unlimited Love in my opinion because I liked more songs there. But even though I liked very few songs, it's still more listenable than the majority of Mother's Milk and pretty much everything on the first 3 albums.
