(Album of The Week #1)
Octopus by Gental Giant

Octopus is the fourth studio album from Prog-Rock band Gental Giant released in 1972. Gental Giant are a band I have never heard of before, with me only seeing the cover of their Self Titled debut, and my first experience is far from good.
Throughout the eight tracks and 34 minutes of this album, I found myself bored to death on some of the tracks such as The Advent of Panurge, and others I find very uninteresting like A Cry for Everyone and Think ... read more
while this album can be exceptionally goofy at times, especially with the vocals on tracks like Knots and Dog's Life, there's some super solid and enjoyable early Prog Rock here. it's all clouded in a weird like medieval and fantasy veneer which can be a bit offputting at times, but tracks like A Cry For Everyone and The Boys In the Band shine through as well written and groovy Prog bangers. a bit of a mixed bag, but with more hits than duds.

So I've listened to this a few times and I really dislike it, the tone, the atmosphere, I don't like any of it personally and it annoys the hell out of me, I have to admit. The album opens with The Advent of Panurge, a song that starts promising before it falls into incredibly annoying vocal chanting with its ... read more

Although still just as experimental as their other works, they utilized a more accessible sound, which is to this album's advantage. Who knew that Gentle Giant could do something, albeit still crazy, less normal than this record's predecessors. This thing has some of the craziest instrumentation I've ever heard in Prog Rock, super entertaining and enthralling.
