CRITIC REVIEWS

Revitalized, Bush is reborn with The Art of Survival, an essential late-catalog installment that re-energizes their sound with fresh tricks and newfound purpose.

Classic Rock

Some people still won’t take Bush seriously. It’s their loss. It always was.

Distorted Sound

If 2020’s The Kingdom served as course correction for 2017’s Black And White Rainbows‘ reckless missteps into monochromic banality, The Art Of Survival is not only a stadium-shaking shockwave of a statement, but BUSH’s best album in over two decades.

Three decades in, their ninth album is post-grunge done right, with action-packed, energetic tracks as well as reflective, politically-motivated songs.

The only thing The Art of Survival shares with 90s-era Bush is Gavin Rossdale on vocals. Everything else is crunchy and modern sounding and is easily the most unique the band have ever sounded.

Kerrang!

There’s much to admire here, not least the equilibrium between Gavin Rossdale’s glacial vocal delivery and the hectic dynamism of the arrangements.

The Telegraph
The album’s tale of survival against the odds has powerful personal relevance beyond its often clumsy social commentary.

In #2020 Bush put out their most important work since the 90s with The Kingdom. In just two more years Gavin will be 58 and Bush will celebrate the 30 year anniversary of being absolutely pummelled and hammered by critics. But Bush have always been outsiders and ‘Heavy Is The Ocean’ revels in ... read more

Gavin Rossdale and his band have gotten the rock culture down to a tee…

…if it was 2003. Bush’s album sounds extremely dated with almost every song sounding like Nickelback, Stained, or Breaking Benjamin. There’s a song called identity and Bush sounds EXACTLY like Five Finger Death Punch.

Every song is completely boring, generic, and predictable. For a band that brought in the post-grunge sound in 1994, they sound like dinosaurs now trying to sound like bands two ... read more

One of the best Bush albums to date with some real bangers. The only thing I don't strongly love about this album to keeps it from a solid 100 are the ham-fisted political lyrics that sound like something I would write in 6th grade when asked to write a poem.
