Rain Dances finds Camel in a transitional phase, with founding bassist Doug Ferguson replaced by Richard Sinclair (from Caravan) midway through the making of the album, and musically, it marks a shift towards pop and jazz (though it's still very much progressive rock), helped particularly by the addition of saxophonist Mel Collins (formerly of King Crimson).

While first half of the record is fairly unmemorable and generic, the second, instrumental Part is absolutely mind-blowing and typical to previous Camel outputs. Another strong release in their vast discography.

A bouncy and playful release that doesn't feel different, but is different in a different way. Difference. Although Camel was never known for their lengthy suites, the compositions that they made in Rain Dances definitely were shorter and more compact in a way that it tried to fit more content in a shorter runtime. Line-up change and a change of sound. With "Rain Dances", Camel beautifully approaches the world of jazz-fusion, both Richard Sinclair and Mel Collins were great additions, bringin a fresh sound for Camel and offering some fantastic bass lines, along with marvelous saxophone workout. The chemistry of the band is impeccable, and everyone is bringing a top-notch work with their own instruments. Also, "Elke" is GORGEOUS, what a soul-calming track. 8.5/10.
