Darker than its predecessors the harrowing Meds is as close Placebo have come to that perfect album.

NME
Secure, self-aware and even funny, this could well be the masterpiece they've always promised to make.
80
Alternative Press

With their stellar fifth album, Meds, U.K. androgyny kings Placebo have somehow managed to pay tribute to Depeche Mode, embrace their inner cabaret-pop starlet and crank their guitars to levels not attained since 2001’s Black Market Music.

70
Drowned in Sound

While there is nothing even marginally groundbreaking here, Placebo have still returned with another steady record in Meds.

70
AllMusic

It's as bare and honest as Placebo have ever been.

60
Rolling Stone

Their fifth album piles on near-emo levels of deep feelings over a plush bed of New Order synth beats and echoey atmospherics.

60
Slant Magazine

A version of Coldplay’s X&Y for the Hot Topic set, Meds finds a successful band doing just a little to tinker with their proven formula—in this case, bombastic melodic hooks supporting straightforward, repetitive lyrical turns-of-phrase—and attempting to pass off a few too many soundalike tracks as thematic coherence.

60
Mojo
A third of these songs can rightly be claimed as classic Placebo pop.
60
NOW Magazine

Brian Molko still manages to carry songs with his affected, nasal delivery as the band provides a steady backbone.

60
Q Magazine
Their most focused album to date.
51
Pitchfork

Meds isn't a terrible album, but there's very little to get excited about on it either, and Placebo's calculated naughtiness is no more convincing than it's ever been.

Prefix

If you are able to ignore the lyrics, you'll be rewarded: the choruses on Meds are catchy.

40
PopMatters
Sure, there are some massive tunes here, more so than on much of the band’s recent work. But by the time the chorus on “Blind” fades back into the verse, it’s so familiar that the anthem passes by without leaving a trace of emotion whatsoever.
40
The Guardian
Molko aims for film-noir sleaziness, but barely warrants a parental-guidance sticker.
40
Uncut
The endless drug references now seem calculating rather than risque, while the daft lyrics simply grate.

Quite a solid LP from Placebo. I actually found some of the more somber and slower cuts on this album to be much more engaging. Though this album still has bangers. Lyrically, it is a very focused album and instrumentally it is well a Placebo album but a pretty good one at that.

Another solid album and a solid follow-up to Sleeping With Ghosts with many great tracks especially the more well known and fan favorite tracks such as Post Blue but with some weaker tracks here and there and sometimes the vocal delivery working very well and sometimes feeling quite unnatural, leaves me not enjoying as much as I hope but still a solid release.

Track Review

Meds 8.5/10.
Infra-Red 7/10
Drag 6.5/10
Space Monkey 6.5/10
Follow the Cops Back Home 7.5/10.

Revisiting Placebo: Pt. 5

People often say that there are too many songs about drugs in this album. But they're writing these songs in a very sincere way, so I don't see a problem here.

It's probably their best album so far. It has almost no weaknesses and its highs are higher than on the previous album (Space Monkey, Song to Say Goodbye, etc.).

I want to talk specifically about Song to Say Goodbye, which is the best song on this album and the best closer Placebo has made so far. The song ... read more

I wouldn’t skip a single song on this project until after Post Blue so that's a good sign. Sadly after this there is a bit of a drop in quality until the final track. However, the only song I’d say is truly mediocre is Broken Promise. Everything else is pretty decent or great.

This is much darker than their previous work and the synths are far more prevalent than ever before. Most of this album is over dramatic with needlessly edgy lyrics but for some reason I love it. I think it ... read more
