Hyper-Dimensional Expansion Beam is unlikely to appeal to conservative jazz heads. It will please fans of the hybrid jazz scene in England and draw in many new listeners internationally who will be deeply attracted to its apocalyptic energy, innovative beats, and rowdy abundance.
Hyper-Dimensional Expansion Beam is bass-laden and synthesised, setting the stage for extraterrestrial adventures in jazz.
On Hyper-Dimensional Expansion Beam, The Comet Is Coming continue their exploration of the wide wonders around us — the unknown, physical and metaphysical, light and darkness, life and death, and the connectedness and spirit laced between it all; broadening the scope, testing ideas and seeking freedom and rapture through rhythm and sound.
Hyper-Dimensional Expansion Beam acts as both a soundtrack and balm for the global chaos that we currently find ourselves in.
If you love The Comet is Coming’s back catalogue, this is an album that won’t disappoint. But if you’ve come to it expecting to hear new, unexpected directions, don’t expect any.
London jazz-rock trio The Comet Is Coming have found a formula and they're sticking to it, but even within the superficially restrictive saxophone'n'beats style they've sculpted for themselves, it's the tonal precision and emotional range they've mastered which keeps each set addictively different.
Kings of spacey nu-jazz and jazz-rock The Comet Is Coming return with another jazz album of the year contender. The saxophone work from Shabaka Hutchings remains insane and strangely catchy. Meanwhile, the building, electronic beats are a nice addition, nailing the cosmic vibe they were going for in a way that reminds me of my favourite album of all time: Flying Lotus' 'Cosmogramma'. Once again though, the band struggle to keep up that level of excellence in the second half.

All the style and structure of a EDM album but it’s performed by interstellar jazz wizards.
If Trust in the Lifeforce of the Deep Mystery was for a walk through desert dunes then Hyper-Dimensional Expansion Beam is for looking into the stars on a crystal clear night. This album does something I haven't seen the band do since Channel the Spirits, it makes the electronics one of the bigger draws to this album and I really dig it. It sounds a lot like a jazz rave mixed together and I don't really know what to call that but this is what it feels like to me. As much as I wish this was ... read more
